Definition

Contains the Cluster ISSN, a mechanism first defined in ISO 3297:2020 to provide for the identification of specific groups of ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), such as the various medium editions of a continuing resource, or serials related by preceding and succeeding title relationships.

Validation

The final character of an Cluster ISSN is a calculated check character, either numeric, 0-9, or X. It is used to identify and eliminate typographical errors.

When you validate a record containing field 023, the system checks the ISSN in subfield ǂa to verify that the content and length are correct and that the check character matches the calculated check character.

If there is an error in the Cluster ISSN (e.g., the Cluster ISSN is too long or too short, lacks a hyphen after the fourth digit, or has an invalid check digit), the system displays an error message and the Cluster ISSN remains in subfield ǂa. If you made a typographical error, correct the Cluster ISSN and validate the record again. If the error message appears again and you transcribed the Cluster ISSN exactly, the Cluster ISSN is in error. Put the Cluster ISSN in subfield ǂy .
