Definition |
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and libraries contributing LAC cataloging copy use field 055 for call numbers or class numbers they assign. LAC uses the LC classification schedules with sections specially developed for Canadian history, literature, and law. |
Guidelines |
You may use field 055 if you are transcribing Library and Archives Canada copy. Field 055 may have numbers from the LC classification schedules, LC-type class numbers from LAC schedules, and incomplete class numbers. Follow an incomplete class number with an asterisk to indicate that the Cutter number varies from English to French. If you are transcribing Canadian Cataloging-in-Publication (CIP) copy, enter the LC or LC-type call number or class number in field 055. For other types of classification schemes use the respective fields (e.g., for NLM use field 060, for UDC use field 080, and for Dewey use field 082). |
Multiple call numbers |
Certain classification choices are recognized to be local decisions. Multiple call numbers in the same classification scheme in a WorldCat record may be appropriate under certain circumstances. For more information, see 050-099 Introduction to Call Numbers. |
