Definition

Technical specifications relating to a moving image resource.

For information on punctuation, see the Punctuation section below.

Guidelines

Prefer use of a separate field for each unique term. For instance, a wide screen video:

300     1 videodisc (104 min.) : ǂb sound, color ; ǂc 4 3/4 in.
345     ǂc 2.00:1
345     ǂd wide screen ǂ2 rdaar

For guidance on describing and encoding the attributes of video recording carriers see OLAC Online Audiovisual Catalogers' Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-Video and Blu-Ray Discs.

Subfields

ǂa Presentation format

The format used in the production of a projected image (e.g., Cinerama, IMAX). For a list of RDA-controlled terms, see RDA Presentation Format.

RDA 3.17, Projection Characteristic of Motion Picture Film, is explicitly limited to technical specifications relating to the projection of actual motion picture film. Presentation format is treated in RDA 3.17.2 and recorded here in subfield ǂa. This subfield is not to be used for any video format.

Do not confuse presentation format with aspect ratio, which is treated in RDA 7.19. Numerical aspect ratios are recorded in field 345 subfield ǂc. Verbal aspect ratio designators are recorded in field 345 subfield ǂd.
