Definition

A linking entry describes a separately cataloged resource that is related to the resource you are cataloging. These fields allow the establishment of bibliographic connections among resources with diverse relationships.

Linking entry fields do not take the place of authorized access point fields. Use fields 700, 710, 711, 730, 800, 810, 811, or 830 for authorized access points.The linking entry fields may be used to generate a note in the record in which they appear. Linking entry fields may also provide machine linkage between the bibliographic record for the target item and the bibliographic record for a related item when the related item is represented by a separate record.

Target item. A bibliographic item that is described by the record. The target item is the item to which the data in Type and BLvl apply. The title of the target item is recorded in field 245.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the print version and the online version.

Related item. A bibliographic item that has either a chronological, horizontal, or vertical relationship with a target item, and for which the linking entry field is created.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the original language version and the English translation.

Host item. A bibliographic item that either physically contains (as in the case of the component part), or bibliographically includes (as in the case of a constituent unit), the subpart that is the target item for the record. For example, if a record describes a journal article, the host is the journal. For more information, see fields 772 and 773.

This record is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the article and the journal that contains it.

Component part. A bibliographic item that is physically part of another bibliographic item such that the retrieval of the part is dependent on the physical identification and location of the host item, e.g., a chapter in a book or an article in a journal. For more information, see field 774.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the book and the article contained in the book.

Constituent unit. A bibliographic item that is part of another item. The constituent unit is physically separate from the item of which it is considered a part. For more information, see fields 770 and 774.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the parent journal and its supplement.

Chronological relationship. The relationship in time between bibliographic items, e.g., the relation of a serial to its predecessors and successors. For more information, see fields 777, 780, and 785.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the succeeding and the preceding serial titles.

Horizontal relationship. The relationship between versions of a bibliographic item in different languages, format, media, etc. For more information, see fields 765, 767, 775, and 776.

These three records are an example of the reciprocal relationship between the print version, the online version, and the CD-ROM version. Prefer only providing a reciprocal link back to the print version record on non-print version records, when more than one non-print version record exists.

Vertical relationship. The hierarchical relationship of the whole to its parts and the parts to the whole, e.g., a journal article to the journal or a subseries to a main series. For more information, see fields 760, 762, and 770.

This pair of records is an example of the reciprocal relationship between the parent journal and its supplement.

Each linking entry field specifies a different bibliographic relationship between the target item described by the record and a related item. These relationships fall into the following groups:

• Related items that assist the user in continuing to search, but are not physically required to obtain the target item. For example:
  • a related main series or subseries in fields 760 or 762
  • a translation of the target item in fields 765 or 767
  • a related edition in field 775
  • an online version record in field 776
  • an item issued with the target item in field 777
  • a former or later entry for a serial in fields 780 or 785
  • a printed source relating to the described item in field 786
  • a companion publication to a serial in field 787
• Related items that have to be obtained physically in order to use the target item. For example:
  • a host item for a component part in field 773
  • a journal issue containing a specific article in field 773
  • a chapter in a book in field 773
• Related items that are constituent units of a larger whole. For example:
  • a supplement of a serial in fields 770 or 772
  • a individual photograph contained in a collection in field 774
  • an individual letter contained in a collection in field 774

If a separate record for the related resource exists, use that record as the source of data for the linking entry. If a separate record for the related resource does not exist, then construct a linking entry based on available information. Consider using the "Insert from Cited Record" function in the OCLC cataloging interfaces to construct the linking entry.

Base the identification of the related resource its authorized access point representing the work (name-title or title). For example, OCLC #6600992 has the following authorized access point for work:

Some records may not have authorized access points for works because the Library of Congress used the key title and International Standard Serial Number for linking fields prior to AACR2.

For a translated serial, follow the preferred title portion of the linking field with the language of the translation according to LC-PCC PS 6.27.3. If the preferred title is given in field 130 in the related record, record the preferred title, language, and title proper in the subfield ǂt of the linking field.

If the preferred title is given in field 240 in the related record, record the preferred title with language in the subfield ǂs and the title proper in the subfield ǂt of the linking field.

The more commonly used subfields would usually appear in this order: ǂi, ǂa, ǂs, ǂt, ǂb, ǂm, ǂd, ǂh, ǂk, ǂn, ǂg, ǂr, ǂu, ǂx, ǂy, ǂz, ǂw, ǂ3, and ǂ7. Subfield ǂ8 generally appears at the beginning of the field. With the exceptions of subfield ǂi, subfield ǂw, and the numeric subfields, which are outside of the scope of ISBD, linking field data are generally ordered according to their corresponding ISBD areas:

1. Title and statement of responsibility area (subfield ǂt)
2. Edition, drafting, version, etc., area (subfield ǂb)
3. Material or type of resource specific area (subfield ǂm)
4. Publication, production, distribution, etc., area (subfield ǂd)
5. Material description area (subfield ǂh)
6. Series and multipart monographic resource area (subfield ǂk)
7. Note area (subfield ǂn)
8. Resource identifier and terms of availability area (subfields ǂr, ǂu, ǂx, ǂy, and ǂz)

When included, numeric control subfields generally appear at the end of the linking field. Note that the inclusion and order of certain subfields may vary according to the descriptive conventions under which the bibliographic record was created.

The use of relationship designators for resource-to-resource relationships is encouraged. This may be in the form of an uncontrolled text or a controlled text value.

The 2nd indicator contains value 8 when the relationship designator in subfield ǂi is intended to be displayed, except in fields 780 and 785. The data in subfield ǂi can be displayed preceding the other data contained in the field. When using fields 780 and 785, do not use subfield ǂi.

If 2nd indicator blank or 0 is used, then do not use subfield ǂi to show the relationship designator. If the 2nd indicator 8 is used, then use subfield ǂi to show the relationship designator. For more information, see Training manual for applying relationship designators in bibliographic records.

You must differentiate pre-AACR2 serials that have the same title proper, but no distinguishing uniform title. Use the following types of information (listed in order of preference) to differentiate among pre-AACR2 serials:

• Edition (subfield ǂb)
• Language code (subfield ǂe)
• Country code (subfield ǂf)
• Qualifying information (subfield ǂc)

Subfields

Limited examples are given in this section. Refer to each specific field listed in the Input Standards above for more examples.

Punctuation

Add a colon following the text in subfield ǂi. Precede subfield ǂs with a period if subfield ǂs follows subfield ǂa. Precede subfield ǂt with a period if subfield ǂt follows subfield ǂa or subfield ǂs. Precede subfields ǂb, ǂm, ǂd, ǂh, ǂk, ǂn, and ǂg with a period. Omit a period preceding any other subfields, e.g., ǂe, ǂf, ǂo, ǂp, ǂr, ǂu, ǂw, ǂx, ǂy, ǂz, ǂ3, ǂ4, and ǂ7. Omit any punctuation from the end of the field unless it ends with an ellipsis, hyphen, closing parenthesis, exclamation point, question mark, or period following an abbreviation.

Within any subfield corresponding to the descriptive data in fields 100-5xx of the cited record, record punctuation needed to separate data elements, e.g., place versus publisher versus date in subfield ǂd.
