Definition |
Information needed to locate and access an electronic resource from a Web archive or a digital archive repository. Use field 857 in a bibliographic record for a resource when that resource or a subset of it is stored in a Web archive or digital repository. In addition, use field 857 to provide location and access to a digitized archived version of a tangible resource (e.g., a book or CD-ROM described in the record), or a related archived resource. Field 857 is repeated when an electronic resource has been stored in more than one Web archive or digital archive repository. The field may be used in addition to or in place of field 856 if it is desired to provide additional information about archived resources beyond what is possible in field 856. |
1st Indicator |
Access method. The access method to the archived electronic resource. If the archived resource is available by more than one access method, repeat the field with data appropriate to each method. The methods defined are the main TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) protocols. When recording a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) in subfield ǂu, the value corresponds to the access method (URI scheme) which is also the first element in the URI string. The access methods with indicator values defined here, as well as those with coded values used in subfield ǂ2, are specified in Uniform Resource Locators (URL), a product of the Uniform Resource Identifiers Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) maintains a registry of URL schemes and defines the syntax and use of new schemes. |

Subfields |
ǂb Name of archiving agency | Agency responsible for the Web archive or digital archive repository.
ǂc Name of Web archive or digital archive repository | The name by which the Web archive or digital archive repository is known.
ǂd Date range of archived material | Intended primarily for archived electronic continuing resources and other dynamic resources to provide information about the range of dates during which the archived material was issued. The dates are specified according to Extended Date/Time Format (EDTF). The start date of the archived material should always be mentioned when known; the end date only if the material described in the record is no longer being archived. Multiple date ranges can be provided in a single subfield ǂd by separating them with ";". The reason for these gaps, if known, may be provided in subfield ǂx or subfield ǂz.
ǂe Data provenance | For information about subfield ǂe, see the Data Provenance Subfields section of Control Subfields. |
ǂf Archive completeness | Intended primarily for archived electronic continuing resources or other archived dynamic resources, information about how often or how many times an electronic continuing resource has been harvested. This information enables the user to infer the archived material’s completeness for the date range in subfield ǂd when coupled with the resource’s frequency. If providing the number of times a resource has been harvested, provide the date this information was obtained.
ǂg Persistent identifier | Persistent identifier (PID) which enables search and retrieval of a resource from a Web archive or digital archive repository using existing Internet protocols. It is assigned to the resource for automated access and other resolution services by a PID resolver. PIDs should be provided as actionable hyperlinks (e.g., HTTP URI format). If a PID resolves to more than one URI, these URIs may be provided in the same field 857, with repeated subfields ǂu.
ǂh Non-functioning Uniform Resource Identifier | URI for any archive or repository that has ceased to exist. Subfield ǂh may be repeated if there is more than one non-functioning URI. A note on the status change (including the date) may be added in either subfield ǂx or subfield ǂz, depending on the local policy. |
ǂl Standardized information governing access | Standardized information about the access status of a resource. The information may be in the form of a value from a controlled vocabulary, or a URI. If the information is a value from a controlled vocabulary, it is preceded by the appropriate value from the list of Access Restriction Term Source Codes, enclosed in parentheses. When the information is given in the form of a Web retrieval protocol (e.g., HTTP URI), no preceding parenthetical is used. This subfield is intended to contain information that is equivalent to the data recorded in field 506 subfields ǂf, ǂu, and ǂ2. |
ǂm Contact for access assistance | The contact person at the host specified in subfield ǂb. For addresses relating to the content of the resource itself (i.e., the item represented by the title recorded in field 245) rather than access assistance, use field 270. Also use field 270 if the address is the same. Subfield ǂm is unlikely to be used in current cataloging. |
ǂn Terms governing access | Textual information about the access status of a resource. This subfield is intended to contain information that is equivalent to the data recorded in field 506 subfield ǂa.
ǂq Electronic format type | Identification of the electronic format type and version. Electronic format type should be specified with a code from the list of registered Internet Media Types (MIME types), taken from IANA Media Types. If necessary (e.g., in order to specify a file format version to support access or digital preservation), additional information, such as PRONOM Unique Identifier (PUID) codes, may be included in addition to the information provided by the MIME Type by repeating subfield ǂq.
ǂr Standardized information governing use and reproduction | Standardized information about the use and reproduction rights of a resource. This subfield is intended to contain information that is equivalent to the data recorded in field 540 subfields ǂf, ǂu, and ǂ2. |
ǂs File size | The size of the file stored in the archive indicated in subfield ǂc. Size is generally expressed in terms of 8-bit bytes (megabytes, gigabytes). Subfield ǂs is unlikely to be used in current cataloging. |
ǂt Terms governing use and reproduction | Textual information about the use and reproduction rights of a resource. This subfield is intended to contain information that is equivalent to the data recorded in field 540 subfield ǂa. |
ǂu Uniform Resource Identifier | The Uniform Resource Identifier (e.g., a URL or URN) provides electronic access data in a standard syntax. Use for automated access to an electronic item using one of the Internet protocols or by resolution of a persistent identifier (PID). Repeat subfield ǂu if the digital object has multiple identifiers (URIs). URIs that no longer function to provide access to the described resource may be transferred to field 857 subfield ǂh. For more information about subfield ǂu, see Control Subfields.
ǂx Nonpublic note | A note pertaining to the electronic location of the source identified in the field that is in a form not adequate for public display. A nonpublic note may contain processing information about the file at the location specified. |
ǂy Link text | Used for display in place of the URL in subfield ǂu. When subfield ǂy is present, applications should use the contents of subfield ǂy as the link instead of the content of subfield ǂu when linking to the destination in subfield ǂu. The use of the link text is independent of any decision concerning the second indicator value. |
ǂz Public note | A note pertaining to the electronic location of the source identified in the field that is in a form adequate for public display.
ǂ2 Access method | The code defined for use with 1st indicator value 7. Use subfield ǂ2 to record access methods other than the main TCP/IP protocols specified in the 1st indicator. Code from Electronic Access Methods Code List. The data in this subfield correspond with the access schemes specified in Uniform Resource Locators (URL), a product of the Uniform Resource Identifiers Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) maintains a registry of URL schemes and defines the syntax and use of new schemes. |
