A note that provides general information for which a specialized note field (i.e., a specific 5xx field) has not been defined. Use for the following kinds of notes:

 
  • Bibliographic history
  • Physical description enhancements
  • Program notes
  • Series statements that cannot be accommodated in 4xx Fields

If you are cataloging rare and special collection materials, use field 500 for copy- or institution-specific notes having scholarly or artistic value beyond the local institution. See section 3.8, "Copy- or Institution-Specific Notes and Added Entries," for more information.
