Language Sets : Success stories
Success storiesAltoona Public Library, Altoona, IowaA suburb of Des Moines, Iowa, with a population of 14,000, Altoona is a rapidly growing town with immigrants from Mexico, China and Sudan moving into the area. The library turned to OCLC Language Sets to help welcome these groups into the community and become a part of the library. St. Cloud Public Library, St. Cloud, MinnesotaThe number of languages represented in the St. Cloud library collection continues to grow to reflect changes in the community. About 19.4 percent of the U.S. population does not speak English as a first language, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. For those people, finding books and other resources in their first language can be difficult, but libraries are trying to change that. Little Elm Library, Little Elm, Texas"I wanted to add that we love our foreign film collection because a library in another state asked us to do an interlibrary loan on a Japanese movie that they said we had and no other library did. It was also our first interlibrary loan after five years. We hope our foreign film collection will encourage more loans. It is also a great way to serve our diverse population and help others enhance their cultural awareness. This is a wonderful way to build a foreign film collection too." - Tina Hager |
