xISSN at a glance
xISSN is a Web service that supports management of serials information. Users can supply an ISSN to find out about any predecessor, successor, and alternate ISSNs and titles, and find the electronic ISSN for a print title or vice versa.
Benefits
- xISSN enables an end user to link to information about alternate versions of serial publications.
- xISSN adds value to the serials metadata that library staffs have contributed to the WorldCat database for more than 30 years.
- Access to the xISSN service is included in OCLC cataloging subscriptions.
Features
- When a user submits an ISSN embedded in a URL to the xISSN server, the server returns a list of associated ISSNs and relevant metadata. ISSNs for different editions of the same serial are grouped together. An ISSN group may also have historical relationships with other groups.
- The service also delivers the electronic ISSN for a print title or the print ISSN for an electronic title.
- xISSN offers both a machine-ready XML service and a human-ready visual display.
- xISSN delivers associated ISSNs in either XML, XHTML, Python, JSON, or Ruby formats.
- The xISSN server supports REST-based requests as well as the OpenURL and unAPI protocols.
Requirements
The XML Web service requires an Internet connection and a programming environment capable of parsing XML data for use in the end application.
