Research : About Us
About OCLC ResearchOverview of our work and mission OCLC Research is one of the world's leading centers devoted exclusively to the challenges facing libraries in a rapidly changing information technology environment. Since its beginning in 1978, the office has investigated trends in technology and library practice to identify technological advances that will enhance the value of library services and improve the productivity of librarians and library users. In 2006, OCLC Research united with RLG to better support the RLG Partnership. The mission of OCLC Research is to expand knowledge that advances OCLC's public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing library costs. This mission is achieved through the integration of computer, library, and information sciences into research activities including experimentation, prototyping, standardization advancements, studies, and research collaborations. The outcomes of our work are often freely available to all, and sometimes surface in OCLC products or service offerings. Today our activities support research and cultural memory institutions of all types. We work with our partner libraries, archives and museums to collaboratively design the future, enhance their ability to support research in all its forms, and deliver effective and economical services.
