OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan service
OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan is a new service that will replace WorldCat Resource Sharing, as part of libraries' existing OCLC Resource Sharing subscriptions. The service centralizes workflows now managed in multiple systems and will provide new functionality that speeds fulfillment of interlibrary loan requests and saves time for library staff and library users. The new WorldShare Platform supports new features in WorldShare™ Interlibrary Loan that require interoperation with other applications, such as the display of lender costs from the Policies Directory and display of item availability from a library's ILS.
Interlibrary loan staff and library users will benefit from the new service in a number of ways.
Staff will benefit also from workflow automation that will:
- Display lender costs from the OCLC Policies Directory to speed selection of appropriate lenders.
- Automatically extend the lender string as needed.
- Eliminate the need for borrowing staff to manually manage 'enter my symbol twice' (EMST) lenders. Lending libraries can determine and broadcast the timeframe for responding to a request.
- Simplify access to the appropriate edition of needed items.
- Incorporate new "buy-it" options to facilitate timely purchase of needed items instead of interlibrary loan requests.
The new service will display item availability and shelf status from interoperable ILSs of libraries with WorldCat Local or WorldCat Local "quick" start to help library staff reduce the number of request for items that are not available for loan. Interoperability with a library's ILS will also enable the dynamic creation of lender settings based on item availability.
In addition, library staff will benefit from new expert/staff functionality in an expanded version of the WorldCat.org search interface, due for release in 2013.
Library users will use familiar WorldCat.org-based services for discovery and to place requests.
The expanded service will be provided to all WorldCat Resource Sharing subscribers as part of their current subscriptions.
Beta testing of the new service is now in progress. As beta participants implement use of the service, they will advise OCLC on usability, workflow and application of new features
Release of initial functionality in the new service will begin in mid-2012 with two small managed implementation groups. General availability of WorldShare Interlibrary Loan is scheduled for March 2013. Libraries will transition their resource sharing activity to WorldShare Interlibrary Loan by December 31st, 2013, when access to the current WorldCat Resource Sharing service will end.
OCLC will provide ongoing member updates as we move forward with development of the service.
