Joseph Hafner
Dean of Libraries, York University
Joseph Hafner has served on OCLC Councils since 2020 and is currently Chair of Leaders Council. He has been the Dean of Libraries at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada since August 2024, and was the Associate Dean, Collection Services, at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec from 2004 to 2024. Before working at McGill, he held leadership positions at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, where he worked as a librarian from 1989 until 2004.
Mr. Hafner has developed expertise in library collection development and management, metadata standards, linked data, and library technology and infrastructure. At McGill, he spearheaded a C$33 million off-site robotic storage facility for 2.5 million volumes, and continues to champion collaborative print preservation, leading North/Nord: The Canadian Shared Print Network as the Chair. He is also deeply engaged in open access initiatives and the use of artificial intelligence in libraries. Mr. Hafner is active in IFLA as an Expert Advisor and former Chair of the Metadata Technical Review Group (METATEC), he helped launch the IFLA Namespaces website and has been key leading the publication of IFLA standards online. He was a founding member of the IFLA LGBTQ Special Interest Group. Mr. Hafner served on the HathiTrust Program Steering Committee and the HathiTrust Community Metadata Strategy Task Force. He is the co-editor of the book Space and collections earning their keep: transformation, technologies and retooling, which is part of the IFLA Publications Series.
