A digital-first library built on inclusion and accessibility

At Leeds Beckett University, Library and Learning Services supports more than 21,000 students and 2,500 staff through a digital-first, reading-list-led model designed to ensure equitable access for all learners. With two distinctive library spaces, the modern Sheila Silver Library at the city campus and the historic Headingley Library, the team prioritises great customer service, sustainability, and a strong sense of belonging. To provide reliable, inclusive access to over one million electronic resources, the library chose WorldShare® Management Services (WMS) and hosted EZproxy®. This approach reflected the university’s vision to develop successful graduates, innovative thinkers, and responsible global citizens, while delivering strong student success and positive impact both locally and internationally.

“Our goal is to make access to resources as efficient and inclusive as possible. OCLC’s systems have allowed us to deliver a consistent, reliable experience for every student,” Julie Cleverley, Resources and Discovery Manager, said.

Streamlining workflows to improve access

When evaluating new systems, the library sought an integrated platform that could unify print, electronic, and digital collections while simplifying authentication for remote users. Debbie Morris, Digital Experience Manager, explained that WMS provided the workflows the Library needed, and hosted EZproxy offered secure, dependable off-campus access. Strong onboarding support from OCLC, including clear documentation and adaptable training, helped staff transition smoothly and build confidence in the new systems.

“WMS and EZproxy have helped us deliver an efficient, consistent, and accessible library experience that aligns with our university’s vision.”

Empowering users and supporting future growth

Since implementation, WMS Reports have enabled more data-informed decision-making, helping the library prioritise investment in high-value resources. Hosted EZproxy has ensured access and reduced local infrastructure demands, supporting the university’s sustainability goals. These improvements align with the institution’s wider commitment to inclusion and digital transformation.

“Our partnership with OCLC is built on shared values, innovation, accessibility, and collaboration. It’s helping us continue to develop library services that meet the needs of our Leeds Beckett community,” Tom said.
