Matthijs van Otegem

Matthijs van Otegem has been the Director of Utrecht University Library, the Netherlands, since 2022. Previously, he was the Director and University Librarian at Erasmus University Rotterdam, from 2013 to 2022, and worked in various positions at the National Library of the Netherlands (Koninklijke Bibliotheek) for 12 years. Mr. van Otegem's expertise and interests include open science, diversity and inclusion, digital transformation, and change management.

Mr. van Otegem consistently advocates for equitable access to information, the embrace of innovation in library services, and the enduring importance of libraries in research and education. He currently serves as chair of UKB, the consortium of Dutch university libraries and the National Library, which works to advance sustainable and open access to knowledge. He has been involved with the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) – serving on LIBER's Executive Board until 2019 – and he co-chaired the National Committee for the 2023 IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Rotterdam. He co-authored a 2018 journal article outlining five key principles for navigating the transition to open-access publishing, and he frequently speaks at conferences. He delivered a keynote on the role of AI and open science in libraries at the University of Johannesburg Library's international conference in 2024 and addressed research library professionals as a keynote at the RLUK Conference in the UK in 2023. Mr. van Otegem has served on OCLC Councils since 2019.
