Learn more about the cooperative platform: Infrastructure

In the second post on the cooperative platform follow up, I talked about the architecture of the cooperative platform, explaining the virtues of OpenSocial and Apache Shindig. Now I’ll give you a quick run down of the third component, the infrastructure. As a review, the three components for the cooperative platform:
• a framework to make data and business logic more available from OCLC's services
• an architecture that enables libraries to integrate community-developed apps into OCLC services
• an infrastructure to support community development, collaboration and app sharing

Using technology to support community collaboration
Finally, the cooperative platform uses a variety of technologies to support community collaboration, development and sharing of applications. We're actively enhancing and extending the Developer Network website, which provides news, information, documentation and conversation spaces for developers. To help provide even more visibility for your innovative apps created by members of the OCLC Developer Network, we've built an App Gallery as part of the cooperative platform project.

Via the App Gallery, libraries can share applications, making them findable and usable by other libraries. Creating an effective way to share the fruits of our labors is one of the most exciting aspects of this project for me, and I look forward to working with the community as lots of creative solutions begin to spring up as we move forward with the Platform.

Of course, the Applications area on the Developer Network site is a great place to see what’s been done with OCLC Web services to date. The App Gallery we’re building for the cooperative platform takes this idea to the next level: you can see what’s available, and then incorporate it immediately into your workflows—similar to the way you can download apps onto your mobile phone and immediately begin using them.
