DevConnect 2022: "Aboutness"-Based Accreditation - Reporting Holdings by Subject Across Formats and Platforms Using WMS

For the same reason that subject metadata is often a collection's "Biggest" data, with prolific headings and data points by which to identify relevant resources, it is also the most useful metadata on which to conduct customized analyses supporting accreditation of programs in increasingly specialized and interdisciplinary areas. I present an approach to generating collection analyses using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), which are too large and unwieldy to access directly through the Analytics interface in Worldshare Management Services (WMS), for both print and electronic resources. By transforming and running SQL on a query collection and merging 65X fields to query into a KBART file extracted from WMS, the analysis can consider subject headings consistently across formats. By working with raw MARC and KBART, the approach also has the advantage of being platform and provenance independent, so that it can be conducted across Library Management Systems, migrations, and consortia. An analysis that is format and platform independent is time-independent, facilitating the longitudinal analysis necessary to surface issues of representation, for instance whether materials about contentious issues had been collected, from which authors, correlating or not with certain social movements or changes in the publishing landscape. It can cross disciplines in novel ways, supporting more diverse and inclusive curricula.
