ASCB announces contest winners and grows its digital library

In keeping with its focus on cell biology, the American Society for Cell Biology sponsors an annual contest titled Celldance. Celldance has become a wonderful way for ASCB to grow its digital library of images and videos by adding new materials.

Entrants agree that if their entry is a winner, it will be submitted to the ASCB Image & and Video Library for free use in educational, media and other noncommercial outreach efforts.

ASCB's Image & Video Library, built on OCLC's CONTENTdm software, is a collection of images, videos and digital texts that illustrate the structure, function and biology of the cell, the fundamental unit of life. The digital library is an amazing educational tool that illustrates the cell in a variety of multimedia formats, including still images and dynamic videos of the highest quality.

In December, the Image and Video Library announced the 2008 winners of its 4th annual cell biology contest. Celldance winners receive cash and free registration at the ASCB's Annual Meeting.

The 1st place winners of the 2008 Celldance contest in their respective categories are:

Video: Clathrin-mediated endocytosis by Janet Iwasa (Harvard Medical School)
Still image: Human Cell Segregating DNA during Division and Human Cell in Metaphase by Alexander Bird (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics)
Public outreach video: The Golgi Apparatus by Rachid Sougrat (NICHD)
