Americas Regional Council Member Meeting and Symposium

Seattle, Washington, 25 January 2013. This Americas Regional Council (ARC) Member Meeting and OCLC Symposium included 180 in-person participants (plus more than 250 online).

Barbara Preece, ARC Executive Committee Chair (Director, Loyola/Notre Dame Library, Baltimore, Maryland) led the business meeting, which started with an update on the OCLC Board of Trustees. Sandy Yee, OCLC Board Chair, provided an update on the Board’s recent meetings, discussions and priorities.

Barbara then updated members on the work of the OCLC Credits and Incentives Advisory Group, who have shared and discussed this issue with members via multiple webinars and focus groups. She also announced the candidates from the Americas Region who would be in the running for the ARC Vice Chair/Chair-Elect position, plus 15 Global Council Delegate positions. Wilbur Stolt, Global Council delegate and ARC Communications Committee Chair, gave an update via video on the progress of the Communications Committee. He discussed the expansion of the Ambassador Program, which will engage elected member-leaders and many additional members in the distribution, discussion and gathering of member input and feedback on issues of importance to members throughout the Americas.

Jay Jordan, OCLC President and CEO, gave an update on the cooperative’s latest initiatives and partnerships.

The meeting closed with OCLC Symposium speaker Alistair Croll, a technology marketing entrepreneur and writer, who discussed the “Implications and Opportunities of Big Data.”  This Symposium kicked off a new, cooperative-wide series of events, webinars and discussions centered on Collective Insight: Driven by Shared Data.
