WebDewey/Abridged WebDewey December 2003 Quarterly Update

WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey are updated quarterly. Both services contain the latest version of the schedules, tables, Manual, and Relative Index entries from their respective enhanced DDC databases. The hierarchical displays in WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey feature updated main class and division captions (e.g., 700 Arts & recreation; 790 Sports, games & entertainment).

Abridged WebDewey is a web-based version of the newly released Abridged 14 database. This December 2003 release includes:

  • all content from the new Abridged Edition 14
  • selected editorially mapped LCSH/DDC through LCSH Weekly List no. 3, 2003
  • LCSH that have been intellectually mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including mappings to Abridged Edition 13 numbers from the OCLC publication, Subject Headings for Children
  • links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  • mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and subject headings from the new 18th edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject Headings

WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced DDC 22 database. This December 2003 release includes:

  • all updates to Dewey Decimal Classification, Edition 22, through December 2003 (corrections, new developments, new built numbers, and additional electronic index terms)
  • thousands of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that have been statistically mapped to Dewey numbers from records in WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) and intellectually mapped by DDC editors (through LCSH Weekly List no. 3, 2003)
  • thousands of Relative Index terms and built numbers not available in print
  • links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  • selected mappings from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

The following interface changes are now available in both WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey:

  • Now access Tables from anywhere in the interface through the Show Options menu list (or press <CTRL><[> for WebDewey or <CTRL><]> for Abridged WebDewey).
  • Easily navigate to the MS Excel "Relocations & Discontinuations" file through the Show Options menu list. This file is available for you to download for your own local use.
  • Easily navigate to the Glossary through the Show Options menu list.

The December 2003 release of Abridged WebDewey is the first release based on Abridged 14. The next Dewey Services quarterly release is scheduled for early April 2004.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Remember, OCLC Connexion already contains a number of keyboard shortcuts. If "Dewey Services" is your *active tab, the following shortcuts activate the following buttons:

<Alt><2> Browse (WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey)
<Alt><3> Create (blank User Note)
<Alt><4> Show (Active Records screen)
<Alt><=> Search History (History will vary depending on your active screen)
<Alt><W> Work Area toggle on/off
<Alt><.> Focuses cursor on the Work Area
<Alt><Shift><.> Work area dialog box
<CTRL><[> Show Tables (WebDewey)
<CTRL><]> Show Tables (Abridged WebDewey)
