May Chan

May is currently Head, Metadata Services for University of Toronto Libraries (UTL). She was previously Cataloguing Manager for Burnaby Public Library (BPL) and began her career at Vancouver Public Library. Her 17 years of experience in public libraries have instilled a strong value for service excellence and collaboration. A subtle change agent, May is passionate about seeing library folk empowered to navigate the future. Her growth as a leader and views of leadership are nuanced and informed by her experiences as a second-generation female Chinese Canadian. In 2016, she participated in the inaugural Library Leadership Excellence and Development program, which gave her the opportunity to lead a system-wide inquiry on learning culture at BPL. During her time in British Columbia, May was active in supporting professional development, both as a workshop organizer and instructor. She is committed to serving similarly in Ontario and the networks she participates in. As a Global Council Delegate, May is committed to learning more about OCLC, forming productive relationships with other members, and exploring how UTL may be able to contribute to the cooperative. Given her strengths and interests, she can envision contributing to the cooperative by strengthening relationships among members through deep listening and thoughtful analysis of issues. Attuned to the complex dynamics of organizational culture and barriers to participation, she is committed to finding constructive ways to improve organizational infrastructures to empower members and increase participation.
