Dean of the Library, Oakland University
Polly D. Boruff-Jones, MLS, MPA, is Dean of the Library at Indiana University Kokomo. Her professional and research interests are in the areas of media literacy and information literacy, open educational resources, assessment in higher education, and organizational leadership. Throughout her academic library career, Polly has focused on engaging with students to understand their approach to research and information gathering and to ensure they have the information literacy skills they need to be successful in their academic and career pursuits. Recently, she has been working with the information literacy librarian and the directors of the speech and writing programs on her campus to assess mastery of information literacy learning outcomes in the general education curriculum. With an interest in mitigating the challenges of the high school to college transition, Polly especially enjoys working with students who are new to the college experience and she has taught freshman seminar courses at three universities. To further support student success, Polly serves on the team responsible for developing an open educational resources plan for Indiana University. Her current research projects include leading AASCU’s Digital Polarization Initiative on her campus and working with a campus team to explore the role that biases play in the spread of inaccurate information. The goal of these two projects is to prepare college students to recognize instances of misinformation and disinformation, to incorporate fact-checking strategies into their daily consumption of information and to improve their own information environment.
