Please provide some background information about October 2000's New and Changed Entries, involving billiards and pool.

Reference: October 2000's New and Changed Entries

Billiards is played on a table that either has or does not have pockets. The primary version played on a table without pockets is carom billiards. The three main versions of pocket billiards (i.e., billiards played on a table with pockets) are English billiards, pool (or American pocket billiards), and snooker. None of the versions is a variant of the other.

Edition 21 had the following development at 794.72-794.73 for billiards:

794 .72   Billiards

          For pool, see 794.73

  .73   Pool (Pocket billiards)

  .735     Snooker

However, this was incorrect, because pool is only American pocket billiards, not pocket billiards in general. In addition, snooker is a given as a variant of pool, which it is not.

The New and Changed Entries listing, shown below, gives the development as it was revised to mention all four versions of the game and provide the correct relationships among those versions. This revised development will appear in the first quarterly update of WebDewey, which will be released October 30, and in Dewey for Windows, version 2.10, which will be released January 3, 2001.

The following development is effective on October 1. It replaces the one found in Edition 21 under 794.72 and 794.73.
