Importing an Existing CONTENTdm Collection

Importing an existing CONTENTdm collection is part of server administration. You must have server administrator user rights to access Server Administration. If you do not have any server administration rights, the Server tab will not be active.

Importing an existing CONTENTdm collection is similar to creating a new collection. You must have the same administrator user rights to import a CONTENTdm collection as creating a new collection. This includes having local administrator privileges on the server in order to create the files for the new collection.

Before using the Web interface to import an existing CONTENTdm collection, you will need to copy files from the existing CONTENTdm Server to the new server. Then, use the CONTENTdm Administration interface to create the new collection.

Caution: If you are importing a collection that uses shared controlled vocabularies, see the Using a Controlled Vocabulary topic to learn about recommended procedures that ensure your shared controlled vocabularies are successfully imported.

To import an existing CONTENTdm collection:

  1. Copy all of the collection files and subdirectories from the existing CONTENTdm machine to the new CONTENTdm machine.

You can either copy the top-level directories to the same alias on the new machine. Or you can copy the subdirectories into a new alias on the new CONTENTdm machine.

For instance, if you are copying the UW collection with the alias of UW, you would copy the entire C:\uw directory to the new machine.

  2. Open CONTENTdm Administration and select the Server tab.

  3. Click Collections.

  4. Follow the steps in Adding a new collection.

  5. Confirm that the Collection Alias and the Directory Name align with the directory where you have copied the folders.

For instance, if you have copied a collection with an alias of UW to C:\content\uw, enter the alias of /UW and the directory name of C:\content\uw.

If you are successful at creating the collection, the new collection will appear in the Collection list.
