Website Text: Incorrect display of apostrophes in Internet Explorer 8
Last Review: December 21, 2011
Description: Internet Explorer 8 does not correctly display apostrophes when encoded for XML.
If you enter website text using the CONTENTdm Website Configuration Tool, any apostrophes entered into the HTML editor (Home Page, Landing Page, About Page) will be encoded as ' and therefore will not display correctly for users browsing the website using Internet Explorer 8.
This is because Internet Explorer 8 does not properly display the XML-friendly entity for the apostrophe character ("'"). (This problem has been corrected by Microsoft as of Internet Explorer 9.)
You can display apostrophes successfully in Internet Explorer 8 by changing the way apostrophes are encoded. When entering website text using the HTML editors in the Website Configuration Tool, click on the "HTML" button on the far right of the toolbar. This brings displays an HTML source editor. Locate any apostrophes and change them to:
Save the changes and publish them to your website. View the text in Internet Explorer 8, and you should now see an apostrophe character as expected.
If you are experiencing difficulties on an earlier version of CONTENTdm, your issue may have been fixed by a later release.
See CONTENTdm Downloads and Add-ons.
