OCLC continues work on linked data, which includes experimenting with tools to enable librarians to enhance and enrich existing data with linked data entities and using linked data for new kinds of information discovery interfaces.
- OCLC ILL Cost Calculator: What’s in it for you? Dennis Massie, Program Officer, OCLC Research Library Partnership
OCLC Research Library Partnership institutions have been designing and building a tool that, when completed, will function as a real-time ILL cost study. The ILL Cost Calculator will provide a mechanism for libraries to gather and query their own ILL cost and transactional data, establish benchmarks against which to measure their own unit’s performance, and enable administrators to get a sense of the potential financial impact of decisions about affiliations and technologies. This tool is currently in beta testing of the calculator’s data-gathering-and-submission phase, which is nearly complete.
- Amplifying Libraries and Communities through Wikipedia Sharon Streams, Director, OCLC WebJunction
OCLC is embarking on a new project to connect Wikipedians and public library staff in order to strengthen the information landscape. The project, jointly funded by the Knight Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation and OCLC, will provide online training to approximately 500 librarians in public libraries across the United States to equip library staff to become Wikipedia editors and to engage community members and other local Wikipedians in collecting and extending access to knowledge.
