New Video: "Digital Visitors and Residents: What Motivates Engagement with the Digital Information Environment? An Update on Current Findings"

This 21-minute video features the latest results of this JISC-funded, collaborative pilot project between OCLC Research and the University of Oxford to investigate the theory of digital visitors and residents with students in the emerging educational stage, the time between late-stage secondary (high school) and the first year of college or university.

In the video, Lorcan Dempsey, OCLC Research Vice President and Chief Strategist, speaks with the co-leads of the Digital Visitors and Residents study, Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Ph.D., OCLC Senior Research Scientist, and David S. White, Co-Manager, Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning (TALL), Oxford University, about their current findings as well as future plans for the project.

The study utilizes the visitors and residents principle described in the University of Oxford's Technology Assisted Lifelong Learning (TALL) blog, which hypothesizes that neither age nor gender determines whether one is a visitor (one who logs on to the virtual environment, performs a specific task or acquires specific information, and then logs off) or a resident (one who has an ongoing, developing presence online).

This work is increasing understanding of how learners engage with the Web and how educational services and systems can attract and sustain a possible new group of lifelong learners. This trans-Atlantic partnership is supporting the comparison of students' digital learning strategies in different cultural contexts. Additional findings will be shared throughout the span of the project.
