Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali is first library in Colombia to use OCLC WorldCat Discovery

WorldCat Discovery provides users one search box to locate local items, as well as resources held in libraries around the world

DUBLIN, Ohio, 12 August 2016—The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali, recognized for its high quality education by the National Accreditation Agency and Ministry of National Education, is the first library in Colombia to use OCLC WorldCat Discovery services.

WorldCat Discovery helps people find and get resources from their local library and libraries worldwide through a single search of WorldCat and thousands of e-content collections.

"With WorldCat Discovery, we have integrated access to various information resources at the library—databases, institutional repositories, our online catalog, and more—through a single channel," said Rubén Darío Torres González, Coordinador Biblioteca General, Centro de Recursos para el Aprendizaje y la Investigación, Vicerrectoría Académica, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali (PUJC). "WorldCat Discovery will provide greater effectiveness in information retrieval, and support the research of our academic and scientific communities."

Through WorldCat Discovery, users can locate the resources they need in libraries' electronic, digital and physical collections, including materials from major publishers and content partners around the world. Once searchers identify the items they need, WorldCat Discovery helps them get those items in their local library, via direct links to online full text, loans from other libraries or purchases from content providers.

PUJC decided to brand its instance of WorldCat Discovery to be called "Aquarium," because, according to the university, it represents an opportunity to see into an ecosystem where different entities interact.

"Having many databases available for students, teachers, researchers and other associated institutions was just the first step to achieving excellence in academia and research," said Jaime Reinoso, Director Ciclo de Servicios y Recursos de Tecnología, Vicerrectoría Administrativa, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali. "Implementing WorldCat Discovery is the final step to bring all these resources together. Now it is very easy to use these databases because they can all be searched through only one place, only once, to have all the required results."

WorldCat Discovery also makes library collections visible on websites where people typically start their research. "Find in a Library" links on more than 50 popular websites direct users to WorldCat.org, where searchers can click through to library websites. A mobile-ready interface that adapts automatically to user devices makes resources available wherever and whenever users want them.

"By subscribing to WorldCat Discovery, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali can not only access library collections represented in WorldCat, but they can also share their rich resources with the rest of the world," said Daniel Boivin, Executive Director, OCLC Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. "With the help of our distributor in Colombia, Nova Informática Ltda, the library became our first OLIB user to implement WorldCat Discovery as their local discovery tool in Latin America."
