MacKenzie Smith is the University Librarian (head librarian) for the University of California, Davis, Library. Its collections include extensive online holdings, more than 4 million books, significant special collections, and growing digital assets. The library's staff of 150 includes more than 50 librarians and other professionals. MacKenzie oversees all aspects of the Library and is also the lead administrator for the University's Data Science Initiative. MacKenzie has served on many advisory boards for library, technology, and related organizations, ranging from the University of California Press Board of Directors to the advisory board for rOpenSci. She also has an active research program, serving as principal investigator on a range of grant projects on new technology for libraries, scholarly communications, and intellectual property policy. Within the University of California Libraries, she has chaired the Council of University Librarians and convened several system-wide initiatives. She is a frequent author and speaker to both library and public audiences, on topics across the range of modern library activities.
