During a recent review of the VuFind WorldCat Module code, we discovered that the module was making an inefficient and redundant call to the WorldCat Search API when performing a search for authors. This was causing specific types of search requests to time out. We contacted the lead VuFind developer Demian Katz and, working together, we developed a fix which ensures more efficient searching and improves the user experience within VuFind. Additionally, the fix is intended to improve performance for all users of the WorldCat Search API by removing the inefficient queries from the API's load.
We highly recommend that any libraries using the VuFind WorldCat module change the code within their instance to incorporate these changes as soon as possible. There is a commit in the VuFind GitHub repository which details the necessary changes. The following files have been altered:
If you are unfamiliar with the VuFind WorldCat module, this module allows libraries which are eligible for WorldCat Search API to configure VuFind so that it can be used to return search results from WorldCat within the VuFind interface. Check out our YouTube video of Demian describing the module for more information.
