Synopsis of the event

The Public Library Association’s Annual Conference provided the opportunity for OCLC members to connect and learn about new cooperative initiatives. Several OCLC events were offered during the conference, including a Dewey Breakfast, Virtual Reference Roundtable, Digital Collection presentation, and an Update Lunch.

During the update lunch, Skip Prichard, OCLC President and CEO, presented, “Four principles that create online impact.” In this presentation, Skip points out how visibility, reciprocity, creativity and authority are important to understanding success online, for both individuals and libraries. Skip then introduced OCLC Senior Research Scientist, Lynn Silipigni Connaway, PhD, who gave a presentation titled, “What Patrons Want, from Data to Impact.”

Lynn addressed the question “How can we design library services that attract potential users and build lasting relationships?” in her recent compilation, The Library in the Life of the User: Engaging with People Where They Live and Learn.

Key learnings were discussed from more than a decade of Lynn’s work studying people's information-seeking behaviors. Lynn will present her findings and some simple recommendations on how these data can help libraries design more user-centric services. The link to her presentation is below.
