On the Web, cultural heritage content is everywhere—in traditional environments such as libraries, museums, galleries and audiovisual archives, as well as in popular magazines and newspapers, in multiple languages and multiple media. To help users explore and interact with this content, Paul Clough will describe the EU-funded MultiMatch (Multilingual/Multimedia Access to Cultural Heritage) project. Project partners developed a multilingual search engine specifically designed for access, organization and personalized presentation of cultural heritage information which provides technology-enhanced learning and access to cultural heritage. This project involved several academic and commercial partners, including OCLC Sheffield (UK) which developed the architecture of the prototype system. This presentation will summarize the project including its objectives, some of the technologies developed within different work packages, the user interface design of the final prototype and some of the problems and challenges faced during development. MultiMatch was funded by the European Commission's Information Society Technologies priority within the Sixth Framework Programme (EU IST-FP6) and ran until 2008.
