WorldCat Discovery Services

Uniquely valued by member libraries, FirstSearch will continue to be offered as a separate service.

OCLC continues to enhance WorldCat Discovery with features from WorldCat Local and features requested by the WorldCat Discovery community.

In addition to ongoing WorldCat Discovery enhancements, OCLC will continue the full-featured WorldCat searching valued in FirstSearch in a new version of FirstSearch.  WorldCat Discovery and the new version of FirstSearch will continue as separate services, and FirstSearch search features will also be available to WorldCat Discovery users.  WorldCat Discovery remains the user-facing interface to WorldShare Management Services.

As OCLC works to deliver essential capabilities in WorldCat Discovery and the new version of FirstSearch, access to the current version of FirstSearch will extend beyond the 2016 calendar year into 2017.

Additional details about plans to enhance WorldCat Discovery and release the new version of FirstSearch will be shared as they are confirmed.  To receive ongoing updates about enhancements to the WorldCat Discovery service, register for Discovery and Reference email updates.

Getting started with WorldCat Discovery

Access to the current version of FirstSearch will continue into 2017 while this development occurs. WorldCat Local and WorldShare Management Services subscribers have access to WorldCat Discovery and all optional features. If you are new to WorldCat Discovery, contact us today to start your order.

Planning your transition

Things to do as you're planning your transition to WorldCat Discovery:

  1. Make sure all of your library's collections are represented in WorldCat. If you have not updated your holdings in WorldCat lately, consider a reclamation project to update your WorldCat holdings.
  2. Update your administrative information in OCLC Service Configuration. Pay particular attention to your OPAC URLs and IP addresses, because these settings directly affect your use of WorldCat Discovery.
  3. Request access to the WorldCat knowledge base (included in an OCLC Cataloging Subscription). Having holdings in the WorldCat knowledge base creates the links to your full-text e-content.
  4. Identify your e-content subscriptions so you can quickly turn them on from the central index.
  5. Know the specific browser requirements. WorldCat Discovery requires use of the latest stable versions of Mozilla Firefox®, Google Chrome, Apple Safari or Microsoft® Internet Explorer versions 9, 10 or 11.
  6. Ensure you have an updated SSL certificate for your proxy server, as WorldCat Discovery requires HTTPS. (See release notes for more information.)
