Preservation 101: Basics for Paper and Media Collections

Register for upcoming sessions of this course

Course description

This 8-week virtual class is limited to 12 students.

Cultural collections may include bound volumes, documents, scrapbooks, photographic prints and negatives, newspapers, maps, works on art on paper, motion picture film, sound and video recordings, and computer media. How should these materials be preserved? What preservation strategies are the most effective? What is the role of new technologies in preservation?

Preservation 101 will explore these issues and more, providing a basic overview of preservation issues for paper-based and related media collections, and giving you the tools to begin building an effective preservation program for your institution. It covers the preservation of paper collections and related formats. Learn how to identify deteriorated materials, how to properly care for collections, and how to set priorities for preservation. The class is designed to help you become aware of your level of knowledge about preservation and better understand collection preservation needs in your institution.

This online course can be accessed fully through the Web. Each weekly lesson can be accessed at your convenience; you do not have to be available at any specific time or location. One of the most valuable parts of this course is the moderated forum for participants where you can discuss your ideas, questions and issues with the other participants. Course instructors will monitor the forum. This online course was designed and developed by the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) through a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services. It is being brought to you through the OCLC Western Service Center and will be taught by OCLC Western Digital and Preservation Program staff.
