Course description

This course provides the basic principles of serials cataloging for original and copy cataloging for print and electronic serials. The course focuses on the elements contained in the CONSER core record, including appropriate MARC 21 tagging, as well as problem-solving and decision-making relative to serials cataloging. All materials are based on the CONSER Editing Guide and CONSER Cataloging Manual. All Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/scctp/ workshops consist of slide presentations with exercises on paper. Trainees will not be using a computer as part of the workshop.

Perfect for

The course is designed for those new to serials: beginning serials catalogers and technicians and monograph catalogers working with serials.

Contact hours

The course is designed as a two-day session consisting of 6.5 hours each day for a total of 13 contact hours.

Course revision

Current revision: Spring 2005

Content has been revised to reflect changes in the 2004 Update to the 2002 AACR2. Course materials have been reformatted and are offered in downloadable electronic files. Most changes were to Session 7: When do I need a new record? The numbering of AACR2 rules for major and minor changes were renumbered with the September 2004 AACR2 Rule Revision: 21.2A1-2 were renumbered 21.2C2a-b. Minor changes formerly listed under 21.2A2 and referred to by alphabetic designation are now listed under 21.2C2b and numbered by lower case Roman numerals. A few small changes were made in other sessions. The Evaluation form has been changed in format and moved to appendix H in the trainee manual to make it easier for trainees to find.
