Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH (CCT)

Register for upcoming sessions of this course

Course description

This course provides attendees with a solid foundation in the principles and practices of subject cataloging using LCSH. The course includes information on determining what a work is about, background on the principles and structure of LCSH, and guidance in understanding the elements of subject authority records. Much of the course focuses on application of LCSH, including application of topical, form, geographic and chronological subdivisions, and the use of names as subjects. A brief session introduces the process of proposing new subject headings through SACO.

This course is designed to cover basic skills.  It will be useful for those who are new to subject cataloging with LCSH but who have some basic knowledge of cataloging and the MARC formats. While not designed to cover advanced or specialized topics, the course will also be a useful review for experienced catalogers, especially those who supervise or train other catalogers. Some familiarity with MARC is helpful.
