Welcome to WEBART™

WEBART™  is a nuts-and-bolts test-automation tool developed by OCLC for testing World Wide Web. internet, and intranet applications and content. It provides a direct, cost-effective solution for creating, executing, and evaluating automated tests that verify your application and web site.

WebART™ provides a complete solution for large scale functional, regression, and performance testing of commercial WWW applications. During a test, it replaces the browser and plays a script to the Webserver. The results from the host are recorded for later viewing and comparing with baselines

Integrated Solution

WEBART™ is a comprehensive solution to your web-testing needs, addressing all major aspects of validating your applications, including:
    • Link Validation
    • Load and Performance Testing
    • Script Capture/Replay
    • Automated comparator with extensible masking
    • Full-featured Scripting Language

Easy to Use

WEBART™ is easy to use and requires no special training. Everyone involved in the creation of a web site, including content specialists, test engineers, programmers, and web masters will be able to immediately begin using WEBART™ to validate links, record scripts, and execute tests. All functions are accessed through a World-Wide-Web browser, so if you can use the web, you can use WEBART™.

Low Start-up Costs

Despite the many features provided by WEBART™, the cost is surprisingly low. WEBART™ can be licensed for unlimited use by a single user for less than  $1,000*, and discounts are available for multiple licenses. A single user license does not limit the number of users that can be simulated in a load test.

Link Checking

A typical web site consists of many documents and graphics that contain hypertext links to one another and to documents at other sites. As the number of documents increases, it becomes more and more difficult to know which links to change when you move a document or reorganize a section of the web. This leads over time to the creation of bad links, i.e., links that no longer point to an existing document.

Bad links are the single most common defect at web sites today. When users attempt to follow one of these links, they receive an error message. This reflects poorly on your site and may suggest that you either don't care about quality or are incapable of achieving it. This is not a message you want to send to either existing or prospective customers.

WEBART™ provides you with the capability to quickly check every hypertext link in your web to make sure that each link can be successfully followed. WEBART™ identifies each bad link and the document in which it occurs so that the problem can be quickly rectified.

Load Testing

Sooner or later, performance becomes an issue with all web sites. Some of the issues may include the following:

    • Transaction rate
    • Number of simultaneous users
    • Response time
    • Ttime between failures
Web sites that provide interfaces to revenue-generating or mission-critical applications are likely to require benchmarks for all of these items.

Load testing submits your site to controlled loads in order to answer questions like:

    • Will it work with 100 users?
    • How long will it take to process a transaction under load?
    • What happens when capacity is exceeded?
With the WEBART™ LoadTest function you can dynamically create and control loads from one to hundreds or even thousands of users and capture and chart response time, throughput, and error rates.

Script  Capture and Replay

In addition to static HTML documents and graphics, web sites often contain active elements with which users interact in a more complex manner. These elements typically consist of HTML forms that provide formatted input for user requests and then invoke processing at the server to satisfy these requests.
The types of services provided over the web in this manner can be as simple as e-mailing the formatted request to internal staff for manual processing or as complex as a real-time interaction with an on-line management information, transaction processing, or process control system.

Capture/Replay provides a simple mechanism to create automated tests to exercise the active elements of your web site by allowing you to capture  interactions with your server so that you can subsequently replay them  to ensure that both the web elements and associated back-end processes are functioning as intended.

Regression Testing

One of the main forces driving the explosion of the World Wide Web is the great speed with which fairly sophisticated sites can be put together. This rapidity of development also extends to making enhancements after the site goes on-line.  Most web sites are undergoing constant change at a consistently high rate.

Web sites share, with all other software systems, the propensity for exhibiting unexpected and usually undesirable side effects when changed. The more frequent the changes, the more likely that something that was working previously will get broken by an "unrelated" enhancement.

Regression Testing identifies previously working functions of your web site that are either broken or behave differently after a given set of changes. With WEBART™ you create a baseline of the correct behavior of your web site, and then compare the site's behavior to the baseline after making changes. Any differences, other than trivial ones, represent unexpected side effects and can be investigated and resolved.
