WorldCat Local delivery-related FAQs
- How do users initiate requests for items they identify through a WorldCat Local search?
WorldCat Local displays the most appropriate delivery option for the item identified, based on options provided by each library for various formats of resources. For example, a user may place a hold or request a loan of a book, or link to an OpenURL resolver for access to online articles.
- How do users gain access to eBooks via WorldCat Local?
Access to eBooks is achieved through:
- IP authentication
- Log on to proxy server for remote authentication.
- Is OCLC working with Google to provide access to books in the digitization project?
Yes. Google has added a "Find this book in a library" link in Google Scholar to digitized books for which records exist in WorldCat. This option displays near the "Buy this book" button on the right side of the Google Scholar screen.
- Does OCLC plan to add more purchase options to WorldCat Local?
Yes. For example, there will be links to the campus bookstore and other local book vendors, as well as Amazon, for the purchase and delivery of discovered items through WorldCat Local.
- Is it possible to block the ILL option for items that we own, but do not lend (such as multimedia materials)?
Yes, libraries can define as part of their workflow fulfillment options when they allow users to place ILL requests.
- We have OCLC ILL, but we don't use ILLIA. Can patrons still generate an ILL?
Yes. WorldCat Local interoperates with WorldCat Resource Sharing in addition to ILLiad and OCLC's VDX service.
- Is it possible to build a local ILL consortium with WorldCat local where no current ILL system with a union catalog exists?
WorldCat Local can be built to interoperate with the resource sharing service already in place within the consortium.
- When I am in WorldCat and look up a library's record for its call number, I am finding a lot of broken links to the individual libraries. Will WorldCat Local fix these broken links?
WorldCat Local will not directly impact links to library OPACs from WorldCat.org. These links are maintained by library staff in the WorldCat Registry or the WorldCat Services administrative module.
- When connecting to ILLiad, does the system automatically populate the ILLiad form?
Yes, WorldCat Local populates the ILLiad form with the appropriate bibliographic information.
- Will WorldCat Local work for our patrons for requesting consortial materials if no one else in the consortium is using WorldCat Local?
Yes. WorldCat Local can be set up so your users can easily identify items owned by other members of your consortium as long as their ownership information is in the WorldCat database. Your WorldCat Local service will be configured to enable users to obtain the materials they need using the familiar delivery services you already provide to them.
- Does ILL interoperate with SCOPUS ILL?
No. WorldCat Local does not currently interoperate with SCOPUS ILL.
