6 Turn on and customize per-article purchase
Per-article purchase lets you provide access to the full text of journal articles included in FirstSearch but not covered by your FirstSearch subscription.
For an introduction to per-article purchase, see
FirstSearch per-article purchase.
The Journal Settings features let you turn access to full text on and off by journal.
-
Access. Make full text from individual journals covered by your FirstSearch subscription available or unavailable for viewing.
-
Enable Purchase. Make full text from individual journals not covered by your FirstSearch subscription available or unavailable for viewing.
The Purchase Settings features let you control the cost of per-article purchase.
-
Display the article price. Display each article's price in the FirstSearch link to the article's full text.
-
Set a maximum article price. Provide no links to the full text of articles that have a price greater than the maximum article price that you set.
-
Select journals by price. Enable per-article purchase for all journals that have a current year or backfile price less than or equal to the maximum article price on the Purchase Settings screen. Disable per-article purchase for all other journals.
-
Request e-mail notices. Receive an e-mail notice when all the following are true:
- A journal's price changes.
- The new price is greater than the maximum article price.
- Per-article purchase is enabled for the journal.
Also receive a notice when the amount spent in the current month is more than 95% of the budget that you specify.
-
Plan your article purchase expenditures. Indicate the maximum amount that you want to spend each month for per-article purchase. You can enter an amount for the current month and each remaining month in the current calendar year and for each month in the next calendar year. To help you plan your budget, the system displays the amount spent for per-article purchase for each month in the current year and the previous year.
When the amount spent in the current month exceeds the budget, FirstSearch stops providing links to the full text of articles. FirstSearch once again provides links when a new month begins, or if you replace the budget amount for the current month with a budget amount that is greater than the amount spent.
In addition to the features in the Per-Article Purchase section on the Home screen, the following administrative module features relate to per-article purchase.
Access

The Access feature is described in the following table.
|

Make full text from individual journals covered by your FirstSearch subscription available or unavailable for viewing. |

Click the Resource Sharing section of the main menu, then choose Journal Settings from the drop-down list under Per-Article Purchase in the sidebar menu to go to the screen that contains the Access column. |
| Default setting |

Available values
The values that you can set for the Access feature are described in the following table.

Additional guidelines for setting values:
- A box appears in the Access column of the Journal Settings screen for each journal covered by your FirstSearch subscription. Your subscription may cover all available issues of the journal or just some of them.

- To place a check in every box in the column on the page you are currently viewing, click Select all.
- To remove all checks in the column on the page you are currently viewing, click Clear all.
- When additional journals are added to your FirstSearch subscription, Access is turned on for them.
Planning changes for this feature
Because many journals are listed on the Journal Settings screen, you may not want to study the entire list to make decisions for using this feature.
However, if you want to print all settings to help you plan changes for this feature, you can do this easily using the Print Your Settings screen, as follows:
- Click the Print Your Settings button at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to Journal Settings under the Screens column.
- Click the box in front of Journal Settings.
- In the Script Prompt pop-up, type the number corresponding to the journals you want to display (1 for per-article journals only, 2 for subscription journals only, 3 for all journals), then click OK.
- Click the Display Selected Settings button at the top or bottom of the screen.
- Use your browser's print function to print the list of journals.

Even if you check the box in the Enable Purchase column for a journal, you incur no per-article purchase charges for that journal if all of its issues are covered by your FirstSearch subscription.
- The

To use this feature, click Purchase Settings from the drop-down list under Per-Article Purchase in the sidebar menu and check the Select journals by price box.

- To remove all checks in the column on the page you are currently viewing, click Clear all.
- When additional journals that are available through per-article purchase are added to your FirstSearch account, Enable Purchase is turned off for them.
Planning changes for this feature
Because many journals are listed on the Journal Settings screen, you may not want to study the entire list to make decisions for using this feature.

Plan your article purchase expenditures

The Plan your article purchase expenditures feature is described in the following table.

| Purpose |
Indicate the maximum amount that you want to spend each month for per-article purchase. You can enter an amount for the current month and each remaining month in the current calendar year and for each month in the next calendar year. To help you plan your budget, the system displays the amount spent for per-article purchase for each month in the current year and the previous year.
When the amount spent in the current month exceeds the budget, FirstSearch stops providing links to the full text of articles. FirstSearch once again provides links when a new month begins or if you replace the budget amount for the current month with one that is greater than the amount spent. |
| Location |
Click the Resource Sharing section of the main menu, then choose Purchase Settings from the drop-down list under Per-Article Purchase in the sidebar menu to go to the screen that contains Plan your article purchase expenditures. |
| Default setting |
Blank for each month. |
Available values
The values that you can set for each month for the Plan your article purchase expenditures feature are described in the following table.
|
| Blank |
No budget. Links to the full text of articles are provided regardless of the amount spent during the month. |
| 0 (zero) |
The budget is 0. No links to the full text of articles are provided because all articles have a price greater than zero. |
| 1 to 999999 |
The budget is a number between 1 and 999999. Links to the full text of articles are provided if the amount spent is less than or equal to the number. |
Additional guidelines for setting values:
- If you use the Plan your article purchase expenditures feature:
- OCLC recommends that you review and update your budget amounts quarterly.
- You must update your budget amounts at least once a year.
- The amount spent is updated each time an article is viewed. Although unlikely, the amount spent could exceed the budget if two or more users access articles simultaneously and the combined cost of those articles brings the amount spent over the budget. If this is of concern to you, it may be advisable to enter a budget amount that is slightly lower than your actual monthly operating budget will allow.
- Every January 1 the budget amounts that you had entered for the next calendar year automatically become the new amounts for the current calendar year. If the budget for a month in the next calendar year had been blank (no budget), the budget for that month in the current calendar year will be blank. The new budget amount for each month in the next calendar year will be blank until you enter a budget amount for each of them.
- Do not include a monetary symbol or a decimal number.
- If you change the value for the current month, the new value must be equal to or greater than the amount spent during the current month.
- You cannot set a value for any previous months in the current calendar year.
