Definition |
A note that gives citations or references to published bibliographic descriptions or reviews of an item. Use to specify where an item has been cited or reviewed.
Use field 510 for citations or references in a brief form (e.g., using generally recognizable abbreviations). Use
field 520 (Summary, Etc. Note) for the actual text of a published description.
Use a separate 510 field for each title when the title of the source of the index, abstract, review, etc. changes. When coverage changes, thus requiring a different value in the 1st indicator, add a new 510 field with appropriate dates to the record. Repeat field 510 also for multiple source citations.
Use field 510 when the indexing and/or review is external to the item represented by the bibliographic record. Use
field 555 (Cumulative Index/Finding Aids Note) when an index is an integral part of the item. |

| BKS, REC, SCO |
For books and music, use for references to published descriptions of the item (e.g., descriptions of rare materials recorded in a brief, standardized format) or reviews (e.g., reviews in professional literature). |
| Serials |
For serials, use to specify publications in which a serial has been indexed and/or abstracted and the dates of coverage, if known. The indexing and abstracting services referenced are primarily those issued for serials. However, use also for certain monographic titles, particularly those that are standard reference tools in a subject area or that cover periods of time not included in continuing publications. |
| VIS |
For unpublished visual materials or graphic items collectively controlled, use for references to published descriptions of the work or collection. Use also for citations to reviews of projected visual materials. |
| MIX |
For mixed materials, use for references to publications in which abstracts, citations, descriptions or indexes of the described materials have appeared. |
1st Indicator |
Coverage/location in a source. Whether or not the field identifies the specific location of the citation. For serials, use the value in the 1st indicator to indicate the type of coverage given the item by the abstracting and indexing service. In pre-AACR2 visual materials records, the 1st indicator value may be blank ( ). The 1st indicator controls the generation of the display constant preceding the note. |

Subfield ‡ a contains the title of a source (e.g., Index medicus), but not the name of a company or organization (e.g., National Library of Medicine). Use the key title when available. If there is no print publication, use the commonly used form of name for the online database. In cases where both a print publication and an online database exist, the name from the print form of the publication is preferred.

‡u Uniform Resource Identifier |
The Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), for example a URL or URN, provides electronic access data in a standard syntax to an electronic bibliography cited or to the citation within an electronic bibliography. If the former, subfield ‡ u follows subfield ‡ a (Name of source); if the latter, subfield ‡ u follows subfield ‡ c (Location within source). |
