Preparing for success

Now that you've configured your WorldCat Local "quick start" service, it's time to get the word out! Once information seekers get a chance to use the service, we've found that they very much appreciate how easy it is to use, and also take advantage of many of the advanced features as well. Until people know you've provided the service, though, they can't begin to take advantage of it. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to best get up-and-running.

  • Make your search box a prominent link on your library's home page. This is probably the single biggest driver of success for WorldCat Local "quick start."
  • Provide your unique "deployable" search box to others. You can share code for your library's search box so others can place it on any Web site or blog. This search box provides direct access to your unique WorldCat Local "quick start" service, allowing anyone in your community to share the benefits with their readers.
  • Promote the service in your library. OCLC provides customizable materials that you can use to promote your library's unique URL.
  • Send a news release out to local media, letting them know about the new service.
  • Ask your staff to attend a training webinar so that they'll be familiar with the service.
  • Create direct links to OCLC electronic resources in WorldCat.
  • Learn from the success of other WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local "quick start" libraries like the Macalester College and the University of Washington Libraries.

Getting the word out about your new WorldCat Local "quick start" service and its unique URL is very important to the success of the program. The more people use it, the more they'll enjoy easy discovery and delivery integration, all the great WorldCat social features, and the time it saves them when looking for the resources your library provides.
