Recent enhancements to the WorldCat Selection service

Author and Title link to library local system  (Completed: November 2008)

  • If enabled by the administrator, selectors can click a hyperlinked author or title in notification records to initiate an author or title query via your link resolver.

View non-Latin script data on lists  (Completed: November 2008)

  • Selectors can view non-Latin script data such as Chinese and Arabic on lists of records.  Previously only the romanized data was included.

Define additional defer reasons  (Completed: August 2008)

  • Selectors can define up to 40 defer reasons; previously this was limited to 20.

  • Selectors specify to display 25, 100, 250, or 1000 entries on each page while viewing lists of records; previously this was limited to 25 or 1000.

Automatically delete records  (Completed: August 2008)

  • Administrators can define the number of days to retain notification records in each folder.  After a record remains in the folder for the specified number of days, the system will automatically delete it.  You can define different settings for each folder: Inbox, Forwarded, Deferred, Rejected, Exported.

Search notification records  (Completed: June 2008)

  • Selectors can search notification records by author, title, publisher, source (vendor name), deferred reason, call number, publication date, added date (date record was added to current folder), projected date (for LC CIP records), and subject to limit results to a specific set of records. Or, continue to view all records in each folder which can be sorted by clicking column headings.

Group access  (Completed: April 2008)

  • Your institution can share data with others in your group so that collection managers can see selection decisions of selectors from other institutions.

View summary of record distribution criteria  (Completed: March 2008)

  • Selectors access a summary view of record distribution criteria.  The summary includes all collection areas assigned to the selector, the record distribution criteria for each collection area, and the selector's exclude criteria.
  • Administrators also access the same summary view for each selector.

ISBN link to library local system  (Completed: March 2008)

  • If enabled by the administrator, selectors can click a hyperlinked ISBN in notification records to initiate an ISBN query via your link resolver.

Automatically remove duplicate records  (Completed: December 2007)

  • Administrators can turn on a new option to automatically remove duplicate records if the same titles are received from multiple sources.  Administrators determine which record should be retained based on either a priority order by source (vendor) or date received.

Link to FirstSearch  (Completed: December 2007)

  • If enabled by the administrator, selectors can click a link to display the WorldCat record in FirstSearch. The system automatically logs on to FirstSearch and retrieves the record by OCLC control number.

  • Acquisitions staff access Folder Statistics to review a summary of the number of records in each folder (Inbox, Selected, Forwarded to Me, Deferred, Rejected, Exported) separated by selector.

Automatically reject items  (Completed: August 2007)

  • Selectors automatically reject items in their inbox, forwarded, and deferred folders that are already held by your library or already selected by another selector at your institution.

Distribute Library of Congress records  (Completed: August 2007)

  • Distribute notification records for newly cataloged books, scores, and sound recordings from the Library of Congress as an awareness tool to selectors.  Book records are distributed daily, and score and sound recording records are distributed weekly.

View lists of 25 records  (Completed: August 2007)

  • Selectors specify to display either 25 or 1000 entries on each page while viewing lists of records.

Export records grouped by vendor or fund  (Completed: July 2007)

  • Acquisitions staff export and download records to your Integrated Library System divided into files by vendor or fund.  Or, continue to export and download all selected records in a single file.

Exclude for Selectors  (Completed: May 2007)

  • Selectors can define criteria to automatically exclude records based on keywords and/or fixed field data such as predominant language, country of publication, date, government publication, material type, and source.  Define the criteria for all items or specify different criteria for each materials vendor.

  • Administrators access the administrator module to define record distribution criteria such as call number ranges, keywords, and fixed field elements. 

WorldCat Selection tutorials now available  (Completed: April 2007)

  • The Selector Activities Tutorial outlines the tasks that a selector takes in WorldCat Selection to select, reject, defer, and forward items. It also shows how to set personal preferences.
  • The Acquisitions Staff Activities Tutorial outlines the tasks that acquisitions staff take in WorldCat Selection to export and download selected records.
  • Access the tutorials to learn more about how the system works from the selector and acquisitions staff perspectives.

Access additional options in the Administrator module  (Completed: April 2007)

  • Administrators access the administrator module to define fund codes, location codes, and collection areas. 

Enhancements to help with fund and location assignment  (Completed: April 2007)

  • Optionally, administrators can set a new option to require fund and/or location before an item can be selected. 
  • The last used fund and/or location is included as the default setting when selectors move to the next record throughout the current session.
  • If flagging and taking action on multiple records from a list, selectors can specify the fund and/or location from the list.

Distribute records based on fixed field values  (Completed: April 2007)

  • Distribute records to selectors based fixed field criteria defined by administrators, such as predominant language, county of publication, dates, government publication, and material type.

Administrator module for first set of options  (Completed: February 2007)

  • Administrators access the local administrator module to define or change some institution settings using an admin authorization level. Currently available via the admin module include defining custom notes fields and settings related to export options such as mapping vendor- or institution-related data to fields/subfields in MARC records.  (Note: other settings are defined via a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that OCLC loads into the system for you.)
