Why now could be the most appropriate time for public libraries to build their eContent collections?

Research indicates that eContent use may overtake print materials use within 10 years. A recent study conducted at the 2008 Frankfurt Book Fair surveying 1000 publishing professionals from over 30 countries showed that 40% believe e-Content will overtake traditional books in sales by 2018. Indeed, here at OCLC we have conducted our own study where 50% of UK public library respondents indicated an intention to increase their collections of both eBooks and eAudiobooks over the next 12 months.

But why in these difficult economic times risk investing in this new media? It seems some are arguing that while people are more likely to turn to the library during recession; they are less likely to maintain that engagement if the library appears out of touch with their needs and lifestyle.

Conversely, if public libraries are seen to be responsive to users needs now then that investment is likely to pay dividends in the future through greater user retention.

There is no denying that eContent is a growing media – the growth in mobile technology such as MP3 players and eBook readers means tech-savvy users expect libraries to mirror their demands for this kind of media. That's why public libraries should take the opportunity now to start building eContent collections that users will demand in the years ahead.

Establishing or developing an eContent collection can seem like a daunting and expensive prospect. Fortunately, OCLC have taken the step of introducing a new eContent 'starter pack' for UK public libraries offering a budget-friendly, convenient way to develop your collection. For one flat fee (including access) of $6000, you can offer your users a collection of more than 40 eAudiobooks and more than 150 eBooks.

The starter pack covers a wide variety of genres and front list titles that have been specifically handpicked to appeal to UK public library users.

And if you need to start with a smaller initial investment? For just $3,000 (including access), you can purchase either the eBook starter pack or the eAudiobook starter pack. In addition, regardless of whether you buy just one or both at any time until the end of October 2009, we'll offer you a 10% discount on the total value of your purchase!

To help you get started, we'll help you promote your eBooks and eAudiobooks with a set of free marketing materials. Visit http://library.netlibrary.com/Tools.aspx to see which materials best suit your library's needs.

Our UK sales staff look forward to hearing from you.
