The following list describes what counts and does not count as a numeric and derived search in WorldCat.

Counts as a numeric/derived search:

  • Entering numeric or derived search keys for bibliographic records (OCLC control number, LCCN, 3,2,2,1, etc., searches), whether entered as search keys (gon,wi,th,w) or as a "find" command (fin dt gon,wi,th,w). They count as one search whether they retrieve a single record or multiple records.
  • Entering search keys that result in no matches.
  • Entering search keys that retrieve more than the system limit (1,500).
  • Revising search keys using the Revise command or Revise from Connexion Search History.
  • Choosing Revise or Repeat from Connexion browser Search History.
  • Entering or revising search keys from saved searches in Connexion client.
  • Re-displaying the results of a previous search using "search history."
  • Selecting items from a title phrase index; see "Scan Command" for more information.

Does not count as a numeric/derived search:

  • Retrieving individual records from multiple record displays or from moving around within the multiple record display including using the "goback" command and selecting additional records.
  • Entering search keys incorrectly which result in a system error message (e.g., "Too many characters in [type of search] key").
  • Re-displaying records or lists by choosing "Search Results" in Connexion browser.
  • Re-displaying records or lists by closing an open record/list or moving to the next window (<Ctrl><F6> or <Ctrl><Tab>) in Connexion client

  • Entering Authority File searches.
