  • MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data Update 19 (October 2014)
  • MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data Update 20 (April 2015)
  • MARC 21 Format for Authority Data Update 19 (October 2014)
  • MARC 21 Format for Authority Data Update 20 (April 2015)
  • MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data Update 19 (October 2014)
  • MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data Update 20 (April 2015)

Online Installation

August 2015, unless otherwise noted. Installation of this OCLC-MARC Update will be announced via logon Messages of the Day, Connexion News, and the OCLC-CAT discussion list.

OCLC strongly recommends not using new capabilities, new fields and subfields, new indicators, new practices, and new codes until OCLC announces that they may be used.

New fields, subfields, and indicators: These may be used in Record Manager and both Connexion interfaces after OCLC announces that they may be used.

Note: For access points in Bibliographic fields 1XX, 6XX, 7XX, and 8XX where a repeated subfield ‡g would be appropriate, but the corresponding authorized form is found in the authority file without a repeated subfield ‡g, follow the coding practice as found in the authority file. If the access point is controlled to an authority record that currently lacks a repeated subfield ‡g, the access point in the bibliographic record will be updated in the future when the authority record is adjusted to include the repeated subfield ‡g.

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants should not use the authority format changes in section two at this time. The Library of Congress and OCLC will announce the implementation of these elements for use in name and subject authority records at a future date.

New codes: These may be used in Record Manager and both Connexion interfaces after OCLC announces that they may be used.

New searching and indexing capabilities: All new searching and indexing capabilities will be available in both Connexion interfaces (client and browser) in the future. OCLC will announce availability via logon Messages of the Day, Connexion News, and the OCLC-CAT discussion list. After installation, all indexing changes will gradually become apparent as WorldCat is re-indexed.

Database scans

OCLC will convert, or has converted, data to their new formats where appropriate to the extent that is possible.

1 Bibliographic Record Changes

007/01 Videorecording: Specific Material Designation (Subfield ‡b) (NR)

Invalid code
  n Not applicable

Obsolete
Code "n" will be converted to code "u."

008/28 and 006/11 (GPub) BKS, COM, MAP, CNR, VIS

Changed definition   Academic publications. Publications such as college catalogs, faculty directories, annual reports, etc., of academic institutions that are created or controlled by a government in the United States should be coded as government publications. If such publications of a state university are reprinted by a commercial publisher, however, the reprint is not a government publication. Do not consider the publications of state college or state university presses in the United States (e.g., Kent State University Press, Michigan State College Press) to be government publications.

037 Source of Acquisition (R)

New 1st indicator   Source of acquisition sequence

Enables the generation of a display constant preceding the note text.
blank character Not applicable/No information provided/Earliest

Used when a resource is first cataloged. Information given in value blank character is not changed (unless incorrect or earlier issues of a serial are later available with differing source of acquisitions information).

Defined as "No information provided" for monographic works that are complete as first issued.
  2 Intervening

Used when source of acquisition information changes. Additional source of acquisition information between the earliest and latest may also be recorded with first indicator value 2.
  3 Current/Latest

Used when source of acquisition information changes. The current information may be added with first indicator value 3. Data given regarding subsequent source of acquisition information can be changed to reflect the current information when only the earliest and most current data is needed.
New subfields ‡3 Materials specified (NR)

Part of the described materials to which the field applies.
‡5 Institution to which field applies (R)

MARC code of the institution or organization that holds the copy to which the data in the field applies. Data in the field may not apply to the universal description of the item or may apply universally to the item, but be of interest only to the location cited. See MARC Code List for Organizations (http://www.loc.gov/marc/organizations/orgshome.html).

088 Report Number (R)

Changed definition   For technical reports, a report number that is not a Standard Technical Report Number (STRN). Use field 027 for standard report numbers formulated according to the STRN Standard, ANSI Z39.23-1983. Use field 088 for nonstandard report numbers.

If the report number is used as numbering associated with a series statement, enter the number in the appropriate series fields (field 490, the 8xx fields), as well as in field 088.

Subfield ‡8 (Field link and sequence number)

New subfield ‡8 Field link and sequence number (R)

Identifies linked fields and may also propose a sequence for the linked fields. Subfield ‡8 may be repeated to link a field to more than one other group of fields. You are responsible for creating and maintaining the link. (The system does not create or maintain these links). The structure and syntax for the field link and sequence number subfield is:

‡8 [linking number].[sequence number]\[field link type]

When used, subfield ‡8 is always the first subfield in the field.

Note: Subfield ‡8 is defined differently in field 852, where it is used to sequence related holdings records.

Subfield ‡8 has three parts:

The linking number is required. It occurs in subfield ‡8 in all fields to be linked (fields containing the same linking number are linked).

The sequence number is optional and preceded by a period (.). It is used to indicate the order in which the linked fields display (lower sequence numbers display before higher ones). If used, it must occur in all subfields ‡8 containing the same linking number.

The field link type is required and preceded by a reverse slash (\). It is a code indicating the reason for the link and it follows the linking number (or sequence number, if present). Field link type is required except when subfield ‡8 is used to link and sequence 85x-87x holdings field. These are the valid codes:

a (Action). Used to link one or more fields with another field to which the processing or reference actions relate. This code is typically used only when there is more than one 5xx field that relates to another 5xx field. c (Constituent item). Used in a record for a collection or a single item consisting of identifiable constituent units, to link the fields relating to the constituent units. All other non-linked data elements in the record pertain to the collection or item as a whole.

p (Metadata provenance). Used in a record to link a field with another field containing information about provenance of the metadata recorded in the linked field.

r (Reproduction). Used in a record for a reproduction to identify fields linked because they contain information concerning only the reproduction. Other descriptive information in the record pertains to the original (with the exception of field 007 (Physical Description fixed field), fixed field Form, field 245 subfield ‡h (Title Statement / Medium), and field 533 (Reproduction Note)).

x (General sequencing). Used in a record to make a link between fields to show a sequence between them. The sequence could be one that orders the pieces of a long field that has been broken up, indicates the relative importance of fields within the sequence, or is used for some other sequencing purpose. Use of the sequence number in subfield ‡8 is required when this code is used.
