Online Installation

August 2009, unless otherwise noted. Installations of this OCLC-MARC Update will occur in stages, which OCLC will announce via logon Messages of the Day, Connexion News, and the OCLC-CAT listserv.

OCLC strongly recommends that users not begin to use new capabilities, new fields and subfields, new indicators, new practices, and new codes until OCLC announces that they may be used.

New searching and indexing capabilities: All new searching and indexing capabilities can be used in both Connexion interfaces (client and browser) when announced by OCLC in August 2009. In Connexion client, new indexes and languages will not appear in dropdown lists, but can be input manually via the command line (Client dropdown lists will be updated with new indexes in the next version of the client).

New fields, subfields, and indicators: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in August 2009.

New codes: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in August 2009. In both interfaces, new fixed field codes will appear in dropdown lists. When the online changes are installed, Connexion client users will be prompted to download new validation tables that will include the new codes in fixed field drop-down lists.

Database scans

OCLC will convert data to its appropriate new format to the extent that is possible.

007 Physical Description Fixed Field (Videorecording) (R)

Subfield ‡e: new code s		‡e Videorecording format (007/04) (NR) s: Blu-ray disc. Optical disc format designed for high-definition video and data storage developed by Sony/Phillips. Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser with a shorter wave length to allow for greater data storage in a smaller space. Requires a special player to view the disc.

Cont Nature of Contents (BKS 008/24-27; BKS 006/07-10)

New codes defined	y	Yearbooks Reference publication issued on an annual or less frequent basis that contains articles summarizing the accomplishments or events of a particular year within a specific discipline or area of endeavor. Annual reports, which are administrative overviews of an organization, are not coded here. Note: Code y was made obsolete in 1988. This technical bulletin announces its redefinition.
	2	Offprints Publication that originally was published as an article in a monograph or a serial and that is also issued separately and independently. Includes preprints and postprints.
	5	Calendars Published systems of organizing days. These may be academic calendars or almanacs, calendars published by bodies, such as labor organizations, library associations, etc.
	6	Comics/graphic novels Instances of "sequential art" in which a story (whether fact or fiction) is told primarily through a set of images (often in the form of multiple "panels" per page) presented concurrently but meant to be "read" sequentially by the viewer. The accompanying narrative and/or dialog text, when it occurs, works integrally with the images to tell the story. Note: Replaces Books 008/33 and Books 006/16 code c (comic strip). New subfield	‡z	Canceled/invalid national bibliography number (R) Canceled or invalid (structurally or application) national bibliography number. National bibliography numbers can be invalid in two ways: Structurally invalid. Determined by the issuing national library and not checked by OCLC systems. Application invalid. A national bibliography number is considered to be application invalid for a particular record when it appears on the bibliographic item, but it is known, through research or other means, that the same number is also assigned to a different resource.

Do not use new subfields until international ISSNs have been loaded		ISSN-Ls should not be added to WorldCat by users until after the International ISSN file has been loaded into WorldCat.

440 Series Statement/Added Entry – Title (R)

Field obsolete		Field 440 is now obsolete in order to simplify the series area. All title series statements are now entered in field 490 and all title series added entries are now entered in field 830.
Conversion		440 fields will be converted into the appropriate 490/830 combination.

490 Series Statement (R)

1st indicator renamed		1 Series traced. Formerly, Series traced differently When value 1 is present, the appropriate field 800-830 is included in the bibliographic record to provide the series added entry. Note: Prior to 2009, series for which the transcribed form and the traced form were the same were in field 440 (field 490 was not used). If the transcribed form and the traced form were different, the transcribed form was in field 490 and the first indicator had value 1 (Series traced differently). The traced form was in an 8xx field. Beginning in 2009, field 440 is not used and the transcribed form of the series name is in field 490 with the traced form in 8xx, even if the names are identical.

4 Indexing Changes

Availability of indexing changes in Connexion interfaces

All new searching and indexing capabilities can be used in both Connexion interfaces (client and browser) when announced by OCLC in August 2009. In Connexion client, new indexes will not appear in dropdown lists, but can be input manually via the command line (Client dropdown lists will be updated with new indexes in the next version of the client).

Connexion browser

The National Bibliography Number index (nn:) and the Material Type Blu-ray Disc (blu) will not appear in Connexion browser dropdown lists until November. Both are available via the command line in both Connexion interfaces as described above.
