On December 1, 2002, OCLC will begin implementation of the changes in MARC 21 needed to support the revised rules in Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2, 2nd ed., 2002 revision, chapter 12). Chapter 12 encompasses all continuing resources. Rules for integrating resources both in print (loose-leafs) and electronic format (updating databases and web sites) have also been added to this chapter. These rules were added to accommodate the seriality aspects of both serials and integrating resources.
The following definitions are from the Glossary of AACR2, 2nd ed., 2002 revision:
Continuing resource. A bibliographic resource that is issued over time with no predetermined conclusion. Continuing resources include serials and ongoing integrating resources.
Integrating resource. A bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Integrating resources can be finite or continuing. Integrating resources include updating loose-leafs and updating web sites.
Serial. A continuing resource issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually bearing numbering, that has no predetermined conclusion. Serials include annual reports, continuing directories, electronic journals, journals, magazines, monographic series and newspapers.
Updating loose-leaf. An integrating resource that consists of one or more base volumes updated by separate pages that are inserted, removed and/or substituted.
The changes at OCLC will occur in two phases:
| Summary of Phase 1 Changes | |
| Freq | Code k (Continuously updated) defined |
| S/L | S/L renamed Entry Convention Code 2 (Integrated entry) defined |
| SrTp | SrTp renamed Type of Continuing Resource Codes d (Updating database), l (Updating loose-leaf) and w (Updating web site) defined |
| 022 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 222 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 247 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 310 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 321 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 362 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 539 | Subfield ‡e code k (Continuously updated) defined |
| 547 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 550 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
| 580 | Field redefined to include integrating resources |
For textual integrating resources, code i will be used in connection with the serials format fixed field. This contrasts with the current practice of using the books format fixed field.
Between December 2002 and the future implementation of BLvl code i, follow these guidelines:
OCLC will change online data validation rules on a number of other existing fields that are used almost exclusively in serials cataloging. The change will permit these fields to be used in records for integrating resources during the interim period. These include fields 022, 222, 247, 310, 321, 362 and 547.

This system started commercial use in 1978, but production declined rapidly after 1998 due to the success of the DVD format. Laserdiscs exist in three sizes: 12, 8 and 4-3/4 inch diameters. The 12 inch disc is the most common size and is typically used for movies. The disc or its packaging usually bear the term or trademark: LD (LASER DISC), LASER VIDEODISC or LaserVision. The 8 and 4-3/4 inch discs are uncommon and typically used for music videos or other short video programs.
