Learn about FirstSearch

  Subscribe to the FirstSearch-L Internet list to stay informed about FirstSearch. Also, subscribe to the Z39.50FS-L Internet list if you access FirstSearch databases via Z39.50.  
  Visit the FirstSearch Web site, which is updated frequently.  
  Read Managing the OCLC FirstSearch Service.  
Customize FirstSearch

  Involve library staff who have an interest in the functions covered by the administrative module. For example, you might include staff from areas such as reference, interlibrary loan, serials, cataloging, and collection development.
  Consult the WorldCat Services Administrative Module Reference Guide about module options and settings.  
  Install one of the recommended browsers. Required for accessing the administrative module.
  Explore the WorldCat Services Administrative Module to learn about its operation.  
  Check your account and change your passwords. See Use the WorldCat Services Administrative Module.
  Decide whether to continue existing settings or make changes. You are not required to make changes because OCLC supplies default settings for all features.
  Communicate any new settings to library staff who need to know.  
Connect your users to FirstSearch

  Install version 5.0 or higher of Microsoft Internet Explorer or version 7.0 or higher of Netscape Navigator (recommended for the FirstSearch service and required for the administrative module). In FirstSearch, major features are also available with version 3.x of these browsers but you may see differences in procedures or screen formatting. Download Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
  Install Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or higher if you plan to access electronic journals. Download Acrobat Reader.
  Log on manually to FirstSearch.  
  Consider other ways to connect your users to FirstSearch, including automatic logon, text-only access, and a Z39.50-compatible local system. See Connect your users to FirstSearch.
Inform your users about FirstSearch

  Customize OCLC-provided promotional materials or create your own.  
Receive assistance when needed

  Access the latest FirstSearch documentation and print as many copies as you need.  
  Consult your OCLC regional service provider, or OCLC regarding questions about FirstSearch.
