UI Widgets

Use the UI Widgets configurations to enable and define features that can help users explore and experience items in your collections.

The UI Widgets configurations can be set at the global or collection level. Before changing configurations, confirm whether the Global Settings or Collections tab is selected. Global settings are the default for your entire website. Collection settings affect only the selected collection. If no settings exist for a collection, then global settings are used. Any configurations set for a collection will override the global configurations.

Suggested Topics

Suggested Topics are predefined queries that can guide end users in their research and help them discover materials in your digital collections. Suggested Topics display on the Home page, collection landing page, or Results pages.

Each Suggested Topic is a simple hyperlink that invokes a single, predefined query. To create a Suggested Topic that displays on the Home page, use the Website Configuration Tool global settings. To create a Suggested Topic that appears on the collection landing page, use the collection settings. Collection-level Suggested Topics will appear on the Results page of a single collection search. Global-level Suggested Topics will appear on the Results page of a cross-collection search.

To create a Suggested Topic

  1. Using Advanced Search, define your search, see the results, add a sort and, when the results are right, copy and save the RESTful URL that displays in the browser address bar on the Results page.
  2. Then from the Website Configuration Tool, click UI Widgets > Suggested Topics. (Confirm selection of the Global Settings or Collections tab.)
  3. Enable Suggested Topics.
  4. Click Add Suggested Topic.
  5. Enter a name for the predefined query.
  6. Paste the saved URL into the Link text box.
  7. Click Save Changes.
  8. Click Preview or Publish.

When you create a Suggested Topic, you need to check a few related settings in the Website Configuration Tool.

Note: For users migrating from CONTENTdm 5, you will notice that the format of the queries has changed. CONTENTdm 6 uses RESTful URLs. For more information, see About URLs.

Page Flip View

Page Flip View lets you browse items as if they were printed books. There are two versions of Page Flip View, one for PDFs and one for images. The two versions are independent of one another: you can enable both versions, just one version, or neither version. Note that the controls for Page Flip View for PDFs are different from the controls for Page Flip View for Images.

Page Flip View for PDFs is available for single-item PDFs, PDF compound objects, and compound objects that consist of multiple PDFs or that combine PDFs with other file types. Note that if you have a compound object made up of individual PDFs, Page Flip View will work for each PDF individually but will not 'flip' through all of the PDFs as pages of a single object.

Page Flip View for Images is available for image compound objects and for mixed compound objects that include images.
