Video and Audio: Compatibility with the inline player in the website

Last review: October 25, 2011

Description: As of version 6, the CONTENTdm Website supports playing audio and video files in the browser. There are limitations on the types of file and audio and video codecs that are supported.

Resolution

The CONTENTdm Website uses a Flash-based inline player to render and play video and audio files. These files must be created using supported encoding (codecs) to be playable using the inline player. CONTENTdm supports the following:

Video codec: H.264 (also known as "MPEG-4 Part 10" or "AVC")
Audio codecs: AAC, MP3

Note that codec terminology is not consistent across operating system or software application. There are many different names for the same codec. If you are unsure how a particular file has been encoded, you can use a cross-platform, open source utility called MediaInfo that will supply detailed information on any video or audio file. For more information, see MediaInfo:

If your file is correctly encoded, and it is still not playing correctly, it's best to contact Customer Support and provide a copy of the file.
