Circulation Integration means that Navigator sets up a link between your ILS system and NRE (the Navigator Request Engine). This link, called the Circulation Gateway, automates many routine functions associated with circulation activities. Rather than requiring librarians to check items in and out of a separate system, the NRE automatically takes actions in your local ILS system, employing whatever protocol is appropriate.
Using standard protocols, such as NCIP, SIP, SIP2 and ECIP, the Circulation Gateway translates messages and instructions between your institution’s circulation system (ILS) and NRE to enable WorldCat Navigator to automatically perform actions in the library’s catalog, such as placing holds and creating temporary bibliographic records.
These resources provide information on how to set up your Circulation Gateway for WorldCat Navigator.
Supported ILS Systems
When your ILS system is integrated with Navigator, many of the normal, day-to-day operations performed by your ILS system are automated seamlessly into NRE workflows. For example, when a request from a Borrower reaches your library, NRE will search your catalog to determine if the item is in your collection, and it will also determine if the item is on the shelf and available. If the item is in your collection and available, NRE will place a hold on the item, generate a Picklist for staff to retrieve the materials from the shelf, and then check the item out from your library when the item is shipped.
OCLC's WorldCat Navigator system currently interoperates with the following ILS systems:
Secondary Circulation Gateway Questionnaires
Please complete the questionnaire that is appropriate for your library's circulation system.
Secondary Circulation Gateway Questionnaire: NCIP Protocol
(MS-Word, 6 pages)
Provides detailed information about your library’s NCIP system and how it might interact with a circulation gateway to place holds on items from your collection.
Return this completed online questionnaire via e-mail to your OCLC Implementation Manager.
Secondary Circulation Gateway Questionnaire: SIP2 Protocol
(MS-Word, 6 pages)
Provides detailed information about how your library uses the 3M Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP). This protocol is often implemented by circulation systems for interoperation with self-checkout machines from 3M®, Envisionware®, Checkpoint®, and other vendors. Return this completed online questionnaire via e-mail to your OCLC Implementation Manager.
Secondary Circulation Gateway Questionnaire: ESIP Protocol
(MS-Word, 7 pages)
This questionnaire asks you to provide detailed information about how your library uses the extended version of the 3M Standard Interchange Protocol, called ESIP. Return this completed online questionnaire via e-mail to your OCLC Implementation Manager.
Secondary Circulation Gateway Questionnaire: Milennium ILS system
(MS-Word, 8 pages)
This questionnaire asks you to provide detailed information about your library’s Millennium ILS and how it might interact with a circulation gateway to place holds on items from your collection.
Return this completed online questionnaire via e-mail to your OCLC Implementation Manager.
NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol (NCIP)
Currently, only SirsiDynix systems use the NCIP Protocol for the exchange of messages between computer-based applications to enable them to perform the functions involved in lending and borrowing library items. For more information about NISO please go to: http://www.niso.org/home
NCIP Messages to Local Circulation Systems
The following document, NCIP Messages to Local Circulation Systems , describes the messages that the CircGateway component of Navigator sends to the circulation systems with which it interoperates.
Borrowing and Lending Agency Application Profiles
The following documents provide agreed-upon sets of behaviors, options and parameters that support the exchange of NCIP messages between the OCLC Interlibrary Loan Application and circulation applications operating on both the borrowing and lending sides of an interlibrary loan transaction.
