A Dewey Services Only session: does not incur access and user support fees; does not count against simultaneous logon limits for libraries subscribing to flat fee Internet or dedicated TCP/IP access; and includes a default inactivity timeout of 120 minutes (default timeout for other Connexion sessions is 40 minutes). Authorized users can start a Dewey Services Only session from the Connexion logon screen or from within an active Connexion cataloging session.

diacritics and special characters
Connexion supports entry and display of diacritics and special characters in the ALA character set. Connexion uses the UTF-8 character format to communicate with Web browsers and as its internal storage format. UTF-8 is a compact encoding of Unicode, a widely adopted standard that supports the communication of a large array of characters from the world's chief languages and scripts.

Enter diacritics after the letters they modify.

You can enter diacritics and special characters in the following ways:

  • With Internet Explorer, use a window that lets you click a graphic of the desired character to insert characters in the ALA-defined set. (Windows only: not supported by Macintosh versions of IE.)
  • Type Unicode characters using a Unicode-enabled keyboard.
  • Copy and paste Unicode characters from other sources such as the Connexion Diacritics window, other documents or the Windows Character Map utility.
  • Use a Connexion-modified, OCLC standard bar syntax. Bar syntax represents a diacritic or special character as a 2-character code between 2 pipe or vertical bar symbols (| |). For example, u with umlaut is entered as u|um|. See also bar syntax.

display mode

Display Record
View the current record in read-only mode. Item on the Edit list in a bibliographic, authority or pathfinder record. See also display mode.

Dublin Core
An international standard that supports creation of simple, informative descriptions of electronic resources that facilitate management and discovery. The Dublin Core standard defines 15 elements for a resource description. Users can define additional elements or qualifiers for the standard elements to adapt Dublin Core to meet their needs. The standard elements provide a shared semantic framework that allows communities operating under different rules or standards to exchange metadata.

Dublin Core has as its goals the following characteristics: simple creation and maintenance, commonly understood semantics, international scope, and extensibility.

For more information visit the official DCMI site at: http://www.dublincore.org.

Connexion supports elements, qualifiers and schemes officially adopted by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. In addition, the system supports a number of OCLC-defined qualifiers and encoding schemes.

  • Headers, used to organize and label sections of content, control formatting for a section and support navigation. A Pathfinder Header contains the title for the pathfinder and provides formatting options that apply to the entire pathfinder.
  • Links, which contain the URLs for resources selected for the pathfinder. Links usually include a description of the resource.
  • Searches, used to include an embedded search that can automatically retrieve and add an updated list of relevant resources by running a user-defined query against WorldCat.
  • Library Material, used to help users locate non-electronic resources relevant to the pathfinder topic.
  • Licensed Resource, used to include links to resources that require user authentication or limit the number of simultaneous users.
  • Flagged Pathfinders, used to import content of another pathfinder. The added content is not visible in the pathfinder you are building in edit mode. Imported links and text appear when you view the pathfinder in display mode. At least one pathfinder must be flagged in the pathfinders database before you can select this element.

See also pathfinder.

Encoding Level (ELvl)
The level of completeness of the bibliographic record according to MARC standards.

export pathfinder
Export a pathfinder either as a static Web page (Export Pathfinder as HTML) or as a dynamic link to the pathfinder that resides in the Connexion pathfinders database (Export Pathfinder Link). Exporting the pathfinder link enables embedded searches to run each time a user visits the pathfinder and allows for automatic updating of pathfinder URLs linked to bibliographic records.

export to a file
Export one or more bibliographic or authority records to a file on your workstation. Each export action creates a new file; you cannot append exported records to an existing file. Export to a file is the default export method.

export to TCP/IP connection
Export one or more bibliographic or authority records directly to a local library system via a TCP/IP port. Establishing the export connection may require configuration of the local system and firewall.

extraction
Function in Connexion for generating a bibliographic record from an electronic resource based on content and/or metadata found in the resource. File types supported for extraction include *.htm, *.html, *.doc, or *.pdf. For *.htm or *.html files, used to produce a single bibliographic record for a URL or to produce multiple records for resources linked to a base URL.

Extraction Shortcuts
Browser tools that let you generate a bibliographic record for a Web site when not logged on to Connexion. The shortcut logs you on to Connexion and then extracts data from the Web resource to produce a preliminary record. To use an Extraction Shortcut, add the desired tool to your browser's personal toolbar or Links bar. On the General tab, under Admin Options, click Extraction Shortcuts. Click Help on the Extraction Shortcuts screen for more information.

local editing
Copy cataloging, in which you modify a working copy of a master bibliographic or authority record as required by your workflow and policies. Your changes do not affect the master record.

Any time you edit a record without first locking it, you are making local edits. The record is not locked. Therefore, other users can retrieve it, edit it locally or lock and edit the corresponding master record. You can edit a record locally regardless of whether another user has locked the master record. While editing a record locally, you can add, delete or change the record content to meet your library's needs and then export the record.

Local Holdings Maintenance
OCLC service that helps libraries maintain accurate, current holdings information by providing a library's holdings for materials in any format, including serials. Formerly called Union Listing.

local holdings record
The local libraries holdings record based on the local holdings format.

Lock Master Record
Lock the master record for editing in WorldCat or the Authority File. A master record is the version of the record available to all users; it does not include local data for any library. Other users can retrieve the record or edit it locally while you have the master record locked for editing.

To unlock the master record, take the Release Record Lock action (Action list) or Cancel Changes (Edit list) or replace the record in the database (Replace Record or Replace and Update Holdings).

If you save a locked master record, the system saves the locked record for 14 days, and then (if you do not edit or resave the record) deletes it from the save file. Other catalogers can view the record and edit it locally while it is locked.

S

save file
A temporary storage area for records being worked on. Users can save unedited working copies, edited working copies, new records, and workforms to the save file. Each library's saved records are available to users from that library only.
A working storage area for use when either completing new authority and bibliographic records or pathfinders or modifying already existing ones. New records are not automatically added to the save file. You must use the Save Record function in order to do so. A library can store up to 9,999 records in the save file. The system prevents you from saving a record that would exceed the limit. When saved, each record is assigned a sequential number, called the save file number (slot number). The first number assigned is 000000.

Saved copies of existing authority records or pathfinders that remain in the save file for 180 days without being resaved are deleted automatically. Saved copies of existing bibliographic records that remain in the save file for 14 days without being modified or resaved are deleted automatically. New bibliographic records (without an OCLC control number) that remain in the save file for 28 days without being modified or resaved are deleted automatically.

save file number
The number the system uses to track records in the Save file.

SCIPIO record
SCIPIO = Art and Rare Book Sales Catalogs. SCIPIO records cover art auction and rare book catalogs for sales from the late sixteenth century through the present. SCIPIO records were incorporated into WorldCat during the integration of RLG (Research Libraries Group) into OCLC.
Records are accessible via WorldCat indexes and via a scoped view that includes additional indexes and retrieves only SCIPIO records.

Started by pointing your browser to the appropriate Connexion URL. Connexion displays the logon screen for a cataloging services session or if your default authorization is designated Dewey-Only, Connexion displays the Dewey Services-only logon screen.

To start a cataloging session, you need an OCLC Cataloging authorization number and password. To start a Dewey-Only session, you need an OCLC Cataloging service authorization that includes a subscription to WebDewey and/or Abridged WebDewey or an authorization for Dewey Services only. An inactivity timer ends a session automatically after a period of no interaction with the server. Update Holdings
Use the Update Holdings action to:
  • Validate a record. You need to correct validation errors.
  • Set your holdings. When the record is valid, your institution's OCLC symbol is associated with the record. For a new record, the system adds the record to WorldCat and assigns an OCLC control number.
  • Display your copy of the record in local edit mode. Local data fields you added to the record are retained in your copy.

Validate Record
Use the Validate action to apply OCLC cataloging validation rules. For a valid record, the system redisplays the record. If the record contains invalid data, the system displays one or more error messages that identify the problem(s). Messages appear directly above the fields/elements to which they refer (template edit views) or above the text area (text area edit views). You must correct any validation errors and validate the record again to verify.
